cpalmer, your car has a 5-475 bolt pattern. All of the XJ's (XJ6, XJ12, XJR) will have this same bolt pattern. Doing some looking on http://www.tirerack.com, as long as you stick with the XJ series vehicles, you can use the wheels up to atleast 2003, if not newer. Going with rims off of say an X/S-Type is not an option as they use a different bolt pattern.
One word of caution though, if you go with a different body style, check the backspacing of the rims to make sure that it is compatible with your vehicle.

I had a 93 XJ6 (now 96 XJR). When I had my XJ40 I wanted the 18" alloy penta wheels off a 98/99/00 XJR and I think Ken or someone on here late last summer told me they'd definitly NOT work. But like Thermo said any of those XJ6/XJ12 style wheels from the X300 cars (95-97) are nice upgrades to an older XJ6 like you have and I had. Someone correct me if Im wrong. lol.
