Default Engine Replacement for 2017 Diesel F-Pace

Hi Jag Friends, I have a 2017 F-Pace- diesel. I got it used in 2022, and have enjoyed my time with it. Recently, I had an engine code come on, took it to my local JLR dealer, and found out it needs a new engine.

It's been a whole saga- an independent adjuster checked it out as a second opinion. Since it's not cheap and the value of the car is good but not great, I weighed the pros and cons of replacing it or walking away... and for me, this time, financially, the numbers were better replacing the engine. With that part of the story aside...

I'm here looking for advice on two things:
- What might go wrong next?
- What should I ask the dealership to do and/or document as they do the replacement?

They were kind enough to tell me that the next issue in a diesel this age could be the TurboCharger, and if it goes, it often (re)damages the engine. This got me thinking... what should I have them check while it's all open? What might go wrong next that I might consider proactively fixing (like this TurboCharger)?

So many of you have posted issues on diesel engines, I figured there would be a wealth of expertise from lessons hard learned. I'm not an engine person, so I also don't fully grasp what's involved, which makes it harder for me to know what to look out for with the dealership. I don't think they're doing anything underhanded... they've done great work in the past... but I'd rather be an informed customer/driver.

Anything you can share is appreciated! Thank you!!

I'll just assume that you have the 2.0L Ingenium engine. How many miles are on your vehicle requiring a new engine? What have they quoted you? Is it a "New" engine?
Yes, the turbo is a weak point. Drive it tenderly until warmed up and let it idle a minute before shutting it down. My turbo went out at 59,400 miles. Jag warranty replaced it

What was the fault on the original engine?

There were 99k miles on it, and yes, they put in a brand new OEM engine- I had it done by a local Jag dealer. The original quote was 40k USD (I would insert scream emoji if I could) but after the warranty company negotiated that they would only pay MSRP (again, insert scream emoji that wasn't what the original quote contained) the price came closer to 27k. Thank you for the warning on the turbo- so far, so good...

Excellent question... I don't have it in my paperwork. The tech notes were scarce, but the part that seems to get the biggest reaction when I show it the notes to other techs are "removed glow plugs and performed leak down test found cylinder 1 5%, cylinder 2 5%, close to 35% leakage, cylinder 4 5% found internal fault recommend engine replacement". I personally find this string a little confusing... but my second opinion confirmed the initial assessment, and the engine was indeed replaced. All good now!

cwomike is correct. You have to cool down the turbocharge by about a minute before shutting the engine off. What I do on mine is when already nearing home I slow down to start cooling the turbo. It's great since I lived in a subdivision wherein I have to slow down for kids playing on the street.
Try to do an oil change every 5K miles (it's good for timing chain and turbo which both requires fresh oil all the time). I do not use the required JLR engine oil since I am doing oil change interval every 5K miles. Currently I am using Valvoline Extended Protection 0W-20. Since yours is a diesel you are much better off using Mobil1 ESP X2 0W-20. It used to have JLR approval on it but it no longer has. I believe the oil fomula is still the same. It's good oil for diesels since it has Porsche, MB and VW approvals https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mobil-1-E...art/5020133446
