It's to save the planet. More accurately, it enables vehicle manufacturers to comply with emissions and fuel consumption requirements.
The Stop/Start system automatically activates when the vehicle's ignition is switched ON. Unless required to support other vehicle systems, the engine switches OFF when the vehicle is stationary, e.g., at traffic lights. When the brake pedal is released or a drive gear is selected, the engine automatically RESTARTS.
Operation of the Stop/Start system is indicated by a green status icon in the instrument panel. See post #2. The system can be deactivated using button 30 and will remain in this state until you switch OFF the ignition.:
However, it will reactivate the next time you start the vehicle.
Does the engine stop when you hit the brakes (your title), or when you stop (your description)? All of the above are correct responses if it's the latter, but if the car is cutting off before you're stopped, there's a problem.
