Just acquired this 2014 F-Type convertible. Wonderful car. Minor issue with strange noise emanating from center console area. I thought might be CD player - inserted CD and car still makes same noise. Before disassembling; I thought I might see if someone here could offer some insight or suggestions. Noise is a high-pitched grinding noise when doors are locked (not when unlocking) either by pressing handle or with key fob.
I also have a 2014 V8S. Are you sure it's not the mirrors folding in/out when you lock unlock the car? If not, the storage compartment between the seats also locks when you lock the car, could it be that?
Thx, Guys.. but definitely not the mirrors. It's coming from center console. Could be console lock, as Pat suggested. Odd that a little actuator would make that much noise.
Try enabling valet mode,(dont forget the pin number)
it will keep the glove box (and boot ) locked when you lock or unlock your car and so should be quiet if it is the glove box lock mechanism
My guess is something is messed up with the 'lockable stowage compartment' (the vertical one). Mine was miswired or misassembled when I took delivery - rather than locking when I locked the car, the cubby door fell open! Not helpful. I can't think what's else would be in the area. That sounds to me like current-limiting isn't right on the lock solenoid, and it's getting way too much power. Just a WAG (wild-*** guess).
Or the lock mechanism is jammed. Does it lock or unlock successfully?
After your suggestions.. it does seem to be the center console locking mechanism. It does lock (most of the time), but makes that God awful noise. I will look for some diagrams to assist in taking apart. Not sure if I can lube or adjust to fix. Maybe I'll get into it this weekend.
Confirmed noise coming from center console lock actuator. Was a lot of disassembly to get to this little part. On taking it apart, I found one of the plastic teeth had been ground away. I suspect, at some point in its history, something impaired actuators ability to lock and the tooth was ground away by metal teeth on drive gear. I rotated gear a bit (only part of wheel is used. Adhering case back together now. I was tempted to leave it out (No errors seen, just wouldn't be able to lock center console. Repair wasn't too bad - though I did (of course) stab myself with small screw driver getting wicked little thing apart. See pics and vid.
