2014 Sv8 issue
Hey y’all I’ve got an interesting issue pop up, was wondering if there was any insight to what it might be! I’ve got a clean 2014 sv8 65k miles no issues besides a bad o2 sensor replaced a few months back. Now I’ve got this rattling noise from the supercharger area!! Attached a video clip showing the noise! I’ve heard about the V6 models having a coupling issue but not sure if anybody else has had this happen on their v8!

And yes that noise sure sounds like a rattling coupler to me.

Huh, I was really worried about catastrophic failure of the supercharger if it totally disintegrated or something. You’ll have to forgive me, I’m a bit paranoid and anything that sounds like it’s knocking / rattling around rattles me lol

The rattle is caused by the spring inside the coupler wearing away part of the plastic on the inner edges of the coupler so that it (the spring) has enough slack/slop to rattle against the SC snout shaft. Eventually the coupler spring wears deep grooves in that shaft which can unbalance it enough to cause excessive SC bearing wear, which in turn can damage the SC rotors or even seize up the shaft. Either that or the unbalanced shaft causes the rotors to wear excessively as from new they have very tight tolerances especially on the edges and it doesn't take a lot of "unbalance" to wear out those edges and fubar the SC. This only happens in extreme examples of running the engine for many thousands of miles with a rattly coupler and worn shaft but it can and does happen.
