I'm thinking there may be a regional difference going on here. Here in the U.S.I've known a lot of folks who have made minor cosmetic tweaks to their leased vehicles and it has never come up as a return issue. It is quite possible that the financial establishment in the UK does not tolerate this sort of thing. Here in the U.S., even the inspecting mechanics wouldn't know what's stock and what's custom unless an aftermarket brand is stamped on it.

This is precisely one of the big reasons why I do lease! When I owned my "fun" car I had a compulsion to modify it, spending money to make it look nicer, inside and out, have more power, sound meaner. There was no end to what I found I could do, as long as I was willing to spend the money. Of course I never saw a penny of that money when I sold the car, well maybe a little.
So, with a lease I have a prohibition against spending more money on the car and it stays stock.
