Default 2018 F-Type 400 Sport Coupe

Hey Guys,

So I just bought the car new and I have 954 miles on the clock. The car went in for some "fix it" stuff. The car has a slow speed (3-5MPH) shimmy, almost feels like a bent rim. The service writer and the service manager are trying to tell me that the slow speed shimmy is "Normal" in F-Types. I am going to pick up the car in the AM, they are going to let me drive another F-Type to prove to me that it is. Anyone have a slow speed shimmy at speeds between 3-5 MPH.

Thanks for the help!!

Never heard of any such thing on the F-Type.
Unless you are talking about the outside front tyre "skipping" at low speed on full lock (known as "tyre skip") which is fairly common on most modern Jags, but it only happens on full lock with cold tyres in cold weather.

+1. No slow speed (straight ahead) shimmy issue has ever been reported on this forum, but full-lock skip certainly has.

Yeah, it’s not the tire skip. The service writer is trying to tell me it’s the rear suspension geometry that causes a shimmy/wobble felt in the seat below 10 MPH. He is going to have me drive other F-Types to show me that they all shimmy/wobble. I’ll post back with results.

What tyres pressures are you running?

Up & down wobble, or side to side wobble?

Ok, so I went to pick up the car today. The Service Manager took me on a test drive of my car and another F-Type. He tried to say that the "hard suspension" of the F-Type causes the "Wobble/Shimmy" I was feeling at slow speeds. They did a Road Force Balance on the car and my butt sensor doesn't feel the wobble anymore. I did not share that with the SM as I want to drive the car a few days to make sure all is as it should be. I have driven "hard suspension" cars (I have a Dinan Stage 4 suspension on my 2001 MZ3 Coupe) and I have never heard of that causing a wobble/shimmy. I appreciate the help guys. Thanks!!!

Service advisors, have a little note stuck on to their desk blotter, "They Are All Like That".

My traction control doesn't work (the way I expect it to). SM took my car in a wet parking lot, turned all the nannies on, drove off and the tires spun so hard that we got wheel hop. He said that they all did it - it's a sports car! After explaining that traction control was supposed to keep the tires from spinning, and getting the "they all do it", I said thanks and spun my wheels outta there.

The nannies on the F-Types are indeed far less aggressive than on most cars. The back end of the car can kick out a coupe of feet before the nannies interfere. Any wheel slip on my MINI will shut down the fuel supply immediately and take far too long to re-engage.

Oh, in TracDSC, the nannies are pretty loose. I just got a VAP chip and am learning to adjust to the new car. I swear that I got it 45 degrees sideways and I got out, not the nannies.

BUT - a car with traction control ON should not be able to spin the rear tires hard enough to get wheel hop!!!
Of course, my SM just says "They all do that!"

Also, the suspension isn’t properly tuned if you are getting wheel hop. Does this happen with dynamic suspension on or off?

Dynamic was ON when this occurred.

Does anyone else have an issue with wheel hop (dynamic on or off)?

On he RWD I agree that the traction control is less intrusive and allows for more wheelspin, this is likely because if it intervened too easily it will likely heavily affect acceleration. I took out a 2015 R RWD a few days ago after I did a lower crank, tune and intake, the car was fitted with Continental DWS all weather tires. I only experienced minor wheel hop when in TracDSC in Dynamic.
Jaguar however went nuts with making traction control extremely intrusive (even on TracDSC) with AWD On my last slalom it kicked in for very minor tration loss (see 17 and 37 seconds in video).
