Default 2018 Ftype R Telematic Control Unit (TCU) Replacement

My Incontrol application is coming up for renewal. JLR rep said that the TCU is old and need software updating for the renewal to take place.

Took to dealer today, and they said, cannot be the software cannot be updated because 'too old', and need the TCU hardware replaced altogether. So now is is over $1700 Canadian $ before tax to do this. This is steep to get the app renewal

Welcome any advice from user past experience. Thanks,

If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say that this would be related to the 3G cellular network shutdown... and that the replacement TCU would provide an upgrade to 4G.

Do you have a subscription to the navigation system? If so, then I would suspect that a new TCU would allow you to continue that service as well... and perhaps the Jaguar Assistance and SOS systems as well?

Just thinking out loud...

Yes it is the 3G shut down. I guess cannot blame JLR for this hardware obsolescence. I do not use the Nav subscription, so only Incontrol - so remote start, set temperature, and mileage tracking are the value... remote/AC is useful winter/summer so maybe that is the justification.

Does anyone know when the 4G TCUs were fitted? MIne's a MY18 (built March 2017) but had a new TCU in June 2018 when the dealer couldn't get my (as it turned out obsolete) phone to work with the remote app. The new TCU didn't fix it, I had to get a new cheap phone for the app, but I wonder if the new TCU is 4G enabled, future-proofing me a bit.

The new TCU is £433 ($696) ex VAT. Seems a bit steep to charge $1000+VAT to change and program a module.

Have you tried to get a price from a local independent specialist?

You may be good to go. By June '18, new builds would have been LTE capable, although the replacement part they put in your car could have been old stock. On your screen, does it show only 3G, or LTE? Here in the US, AT&T has already sunset 3G. So, if a car is still connecting, it's after the TCU change.

(BTW, I wouldn't give JLR a free pass on the technology transition. The coming 3G sunset was already well known/publicized by then. Of course, they weren't the only manufacturer caught up in the sunset. Some are working with customers on updates; some aren't.)

My TCU does receive OTA updates, which Jag Customer Services said it couldn't, so I guess they didn't know about the TCU change. It also shows 4G on my connected phone. Looks like I got lucky, although the shop did damage a bit of paintwork while it was in their "care" (which I didn't spot until a few weeks later).

I did some research a while ago and found an article on Car and Driver. In addition to listing what JLR features will go away, the article claims that JLR will try to 'downgrade' the 3G vehicles to use T-Mobile's 2G service to still provide InControl Remote functions. If all you want is the Remote features, perhaps you don't need to upgrade your InControl software (or TCU) just now. Admittedly, though, that's just wishful thinking.

FWIW, the upper right corner of my screen (MY21) shows battery charge and signal for my connected phone - when connected - otherwise a phone handset with a bar through it. To the right of that is two symbols for the vehicle's cellular signal strength and network (4G).

My early build MY18 (March 17) shows "3G" next to the car SIM bar strength but I'm still connecting here in the Northeast and I know for a fact AT&T has turned off 3G in my area. I suspect it is 4G even though the display only shows 3G.

The 2G path is only for the JLR side communications (emergency, vehicle locator, etc) - not the full ICTP functions. Also, the patch only lasts until year-end, when 2G follows 3G off the cliff.

I renewed my remote subscription last august. Then my touchscreen kept going to sleep and only waking up randomly. Once awake, it would work perfectly the rest of the day. Then the next morning, asleep again. Jaguar customer service said I need a tcu software upgrade. I recently download the remote app replacement. This works perfectly but now my touchscreen never wakes up. Will bring to dealer next mont.

Default TCU Battery Replacement

Back in the forum - got rid of my XK8 and now have a 2016 F-Type (hope I won't regret it). So now I have an "SOS System - Limited Functionality" soft warning. I do not subscribe to any of the telemetrics options.
I've seen a couple of older threads with some conflicting information. Can I try just replacing the battery in the TCU? I have the battery and it is an easy replacement. Are there any software or OBD2 resets required?

Just replace the battery. Where did you get it?

Thanks for the "comeback". I bought the TCU battery from my Jaguar/Land Rover dealer. FYI - it was $132.37 with tax.

Good point - TCU battery is Jaguar P/N T4N2591 but they provided the Land Rover crossover which is P/N LR046049 (description - LITHIUM METAL B)

If your 2016 TCU is working just fine today with InControl...is all well? I can see the car the car and JLR seem quite pleased to keep taking my money for the service.

It is sort of nice ot be able to remote start it in winter and check to see if I remembered to lock it...rare but happened once when car was parked in a bad place....may have paid for itself.

Default 2016 F-Type S - "SOS System - Limited Functionality"

It sounded too easy - I replaced the battery (Jaguar P/N T4N2591 - Land Rover crossover which is P/N LR046049) in my Telemetric Module and it did not fix the "soft" SOS limited functionality error message. As mentioned, I do not use InControl or any remote options. Thinking it is time for a dealer visit for a software/systems refresh?

Own a concours class 1958 T-Bird convertible (one of only 2,134 made - probably only around 100 still registered worldwide).
