If you are sleepy, it won't help you stay aware, but this guy is thorough and really competent.

Unfortunately that doesn't extend to his English or lack thereof...he can't even say Jag-u-are, Coup-ay or Alum-in-eeeyum properly

Heathen!

Comprehensive review, with excellent comparisons to competing models from other manufacturers. I enjoyed it without nodding off.

Agree

Actually the English pronunciation is Jag-U-ER. JAG-U-ARE is a mispronunciation by colonial natives.

This guy gets it right.

Tel's in the UK, so from my perspective, he's an authority on English. I do like Saloon vs. Sedan.

I think if he considered the umbrella holder in the jaguar it would be a clear win over the Z4!!

I'm from the UK too. Been to Coventry many times, was born in Southampton, studied at Oxford. And the guy in my video link is English too.

But England has more local accents than the rat of the English speaking world combined so it wouldn't surprise me if we are both right.

Great review, BUT, I can't believe he didn't spend any time on the exhaust. How can you review the F-Type and not listen to its exhaust??

He's not too keen on the MT. To me, even though it's slower than the auto, the manual fits the sportscar feel and that more subjective itch.

My sense is the MT works well with the V6 but it wouldn't make sense on the R because it's too hard to drive 550hp smoothly with a manual.

With my BMWs I always preferred the manual until I bought the most recent M5. With the latest models the manual seems inappropriate given the speed of the engine and how fast it revs and delivers power.

With the right manual, 500+HP can be driven very smoothly with a manual. The C6 Z06 was only available with a 6MT Tremec, and it could be driven as smooth as silk. It was one of my favorite cars of all time.

The ZF MT in the F-Type V6 isn't sturdy enough to handle the torque of the V8 engine and would disintegrate it quickly.

My neighbor is a part owner of the local Jag dealership and said the 8cyl chewed up the clutch by the hour. I am not enough of an intelligent car guy to be able to explain properly, but it was something to do with the torque as Foosh said...... and I love edumacation. If you can explain in more depth... is it that the gears get torn apart?

Since Top Gear, I've not referred to a car's boot as a trunk in 5 years.

There are a number of transmissions available (e.g. Doug Nash, Tremec, etc.) that can easily handle 500 lb-feet of torque. The tranny isn't the issue (though ZF certainly doesn't make anything that's up to the task). Unfortunately, standard clutches that can handle 500 lb-ft of torque (ie racing clutches) rely on extremely stiff springs to hold the friction surfaces together without allowing them to slip. That results in having to apply herculean leg force to disengage the clutch with the pedal. As is, even on the V6S with only 380 lb-ft of torque, the Jag provided clutch is not of adequate strength under a full throttle launch to fully engage. I would think, with a little design effort, they could install a power assisted racing clutch that could be enjoyed by even the wimpiest of country squires. I do have to admit that the clutch I had to use on my heavily tuned C4 Vette became very burdensome in heavy stop&go traffic.
