Default Asking for a friend

A friend of mine is considering buying a 2017 F-Type and I don't think that my experience with my 2001 XK8, while good, is relevant so I'm asking the experts.
What do you suggest that I tell him?

I'd say that the Vision Pack is really a must-have option. The rest is "to taste."

I had an 02 XK8 and you are correct it isn't relevant. The car grows on you, but I would go a few steps beyond Lizz, get as fully optioned a vehicle as you can.

For my 11th Jaguar, I read all the brochures available at the time -- through MY 2016, and decided on my personal preferences. V8, AWD, DHC, active exhaust etc. Much of the technology is extant throughout the lineup, yet the V8 ruled, as did the AWD. I drove a few from dealers and confirmed what I wanted. Then narrowed color choices (BRG) and seating, found that the R had all I wanted. All my Jaguars have given me grins whilst driving or just viewing, whether in my garage or at the portico of the venue where I attended. Take your time, pick your features, and go for it. You will be thrilled....promise.

Your friend should be OK with a sports car. Unlike your XK, which is a touring car, F-type is less roomy and less cushy in every and all ways. It absolutely makes it up for this with driving experience, but the trade-off needs to be desirable to your friend.

Don't buy F-type thinking it is a drop-top 2-door XJ.

I bought a 2017 FType, S. It is only capable of 170 mph, as opposed to the 200 mph available with the R model, but my question is always, "Where you gonna do it??". I know, I could track it, do the stop light drag thing, or whatever, but at my age, 72, and a retired military, airline pilot, I have done 170 kts(195 mph) on a runway during takeoff, steering only with my feet, I have gone Mach 1.3 at 52,000', and numerous other little tricks that got my heart rate 'over the top (getting shot at does not count, no choice). I don't need to get on a public highway, endangering others with my own stupidity, trying to show off what my 'Toy' can do.
My MY2017 can leave the local Corvettes standing still, but Why?? I purposely bought mine in BRG. Cops always look right past me, at the red Vettes. If I am a little over the speed limit(o.k., sometimes), they seldom give me a second look.
For my backup, I have a '06 XK8. It is my 'Play car'. Always something to work on. My wife cannot understand why I like having an 'Old Car'. I keep trying to get her to understand, 'Old men like Old cars'. On the XK, there is always something to refurbish, restore, rework. Keeps me off the streets, and out of the bars, well, sometimes..........

Er, it's the SVR that's good for 200 mph, the R is limited at 186 mph. It gets there quickly, though ...

Thanks, everyone.
So no negative comments, all positive.
It's just a matter of taste.
I think that my friend has already cleared that hurdle so I'll tell him that the experts don't give any reasons not to buy this car.
Of course I'll have to take it for a ride.
