Audio settings question

I'm an old school two channel guy (home system is Linn), musical taste is all over the place, Doobie Brothers to Dua Lipa. Tool to... ( not Toto, yuck).
I started with the system flat and tried all the surround tunes but none of them had a good sound stage, and while the system is somewhat detailed, the highs sounded a bit shrill.
And the sub is a muddy mess.
I find the best way to accentuate the mid bass (which is where you get the punch in the chest dynamics) is to turn down everything else a bit.
I have the surround turned off, fader set all the way forward, treble down two clicks, bass left flat, sub down four clicks.

I found on my 2014 convertible that with the roof up the sound level is different (lower)then when the roof is down. I think the system is designed this way to keep the sound level down in such a small space.
I found with the roof down the sound dynamics and sound spectrum is fuller. Roof up the eq is much flatter across the spectrum.
