Default Bad valves or knocking fuel pump/injectors

Well the dealer and North American jag have said that they will not do anything about my issue, I have had 3 different dealers look at it and tell me many things in order to pass the buck, from the "noise" will pass at breakin, to its "not" valves by just listening to it.
So how do I, a backyard mechanic, do a valve/fuel injector/fuel pump test...
Yes I'm about frustrated....I've spent too many hours at the dealer already.

Find a car similar to yours and listen to that engine. My guess is that it will make identical noises.

How many miles on the car?
What are you hearing? (can you post a recording?)
At what engine speed is it the loudest (under load or free-rev?)
What location in the engine compartment? (have you used a stethoscope or very long screw driver to listen for the source of the noise?)

I've read that if its valve noise, it may be louder with the oil filler cap removed(?)

Injectors, by definition 'click'.

Short of taking things apart, not sure what to suggest. Maybe add a can of injector cleaner (BG44K) to the gas. Use good brand of premium gas. Make sure oil level is actually 'full' by some method other than relying on the electronic display (ie change oil and add the full amount by volume?).

Search the other forums on this site for similar symptoms with other Jaguar cars?

Just a note to think about. When i had my SL500 had the same problem and it came down to two factors

1) using cheap as gas (Arco or a mini mart)
2) using 87 Octane

high performance cars have to have 91 plus octane and not cheap gas. always best to use the same brand as well
both Shell and Chevron are the choices of Mercedes and I am sure Jag as well.
after i started and never stopped for 10 years never had that problem again plus the car ran better.

just a FYI maybe to try

16,000 miles, from idle all the way up the range of rpms, i havent gotten a recording of it, i think that would have to be in a shop or something in order to cancel out other noises. Its coming from the engine,where...? i wish someone could tell me, and the stethoscope n screwdriver trick i havent done either.

Great ideas, i can understand the taking the filter cap off and see if it gets louder.
im using 93 octane, where i can find it, but always at least 91.
Just did the 15,000 mile service, where one dealership(ive been to 3) told me it was just break in noise...so much for that.

A Dealership that finds it easy to report and fix faults with the manufacturer is always going to be happy to help the customer.

One that gets fobbed off or hassled will be less enthusiastic.

Dealerships vary, but if several behave the same way it suggests the dealerships do not get a warm reception from the manufacturer when reporting faults.

Just a thought JLR...

Sad part about this thread is that you never really described what you are hearing and when. Few have as much "consumer" experience with the Jaguar 5.0 supercharged motor than me...I had a 2010 XFR for 5 years and now have a 2015 R coupe.

I want to help so describe the sound in detail.

Without hearing the sound it's almost impossible to guess.

In saying that, exhaust leaks can sound like a metallic tapping or rattle, especially on a V8 when the leak is only on one bank & the noise occurs only when that bank or even cylinder is firing, so it's a slower rythmic tick.

Random stab in the dark...

+1. Is the sound more pronounced when the engine is still warming up? Does it almost sound like a normal diesel engine tapping?

Record the sound with a smartphone and post the recording.

You will hear a VERY pronounced clicking/tapping on all Direct Injection engines. It is the injectors opening and closing at high pressure (1000psi or more)
My Corvette is the same way.. It is just the nature of the beast.. Some OEMs do a better job of insulating the noise than others but all will click/tap. Some will even sound like a diesel when not insulated very well.
So this could be what you are hearing..

I've been building a partially closed carport, haven't enclosed it yet and that's what I've been waiting for to record the sound, there are things I've wanted to do all at once but now I've got a few great ideas from all you, I can go ahead and try some...I'll b back....and thanks all.

Default Bad Valve Noise

I had the same problem with my 2014 FType V6S. They changed out the supercharger and fixed the noise. Two things go wrong with the unit - the first is a spring mount and the second is slack in the bearing assembly. I had very good sewrvice from the dealer with this. I have 13,000 klms.

ok, well i think an end is coming to my first jag, my dealership has fired the service manager and i havent complained too much about my knocking noise even though is was embarrasing to have people say whats the noise, so im trading in for a 2015 ftype s convertible. i got 19000+ miles out of my stock tires, had a track day on them and i also plugged a nail hole. Very solid car in all aspects. im very grateful my dealership has extended me the offer, its not a done deal just yet but even if i dont tradein and up, thats what i call customer relations...good job Jaguar of Columbias' Lucan
Breedlove and thanks

I had a similar problem with my 2014 FType S V6. After replacing the SC Jag took the heads off and found the valve lash was too much. They replaced the exhaust valves, etc. and the motor is now quiet. Great service but needed a real mechanic to sort this out.
