Best placement for mic in engine bay?
I've been attempting to record the engine bay's sounds to mix along a video I'm making. I placed an omni-directional lavalier mic in the left wheel well in engine bay. However, it recorded a ton of unwanted noises that you'd never hear as well, like ticks, pulleys, and so on. The fascinating thing though, is that I can audibly hear the supercharger whine in the engine bay, even if you don't hear it at all while driving. Must be very good insulation, then. As it is the only thing worth capturing, where would be an ideal place to put a mic for recording that supercharger whine, while skipping on everything else?

It's a mechanically noisy engine, so I am not surprised you got a lot of different sounds. I suspect to the rear might be better, away from the belts, pulleys, and things they drive. You might need to process the recording later, but I'm no sound engineer so feel free to ignore my babbling.

Better yet, how about at the exhaust pipes?

I agree about the abundance of engine noises....was thinking about that today, when I opened the bonnet on our (cold) running engine (no cover) to check the coolant.
Look up the word Cacophony.
