Default Black is the new up price

I was just playing around with building my new F-Type R and noticed that black calipers are a $510 option upgrade from red ($0).
I had always assumed red was premium and was never sure I would pay extra for it, but now it sems black is an extra $510, so now the choice is reversed.
Red or black with BRG or blue?

Black calipers have been an upcharge for at least the last 2 model years--prior to that I am unsure. I ordered them on my '22 F-Type R last year for $510

Black calipers have always been chargeable, on my 14 plate R they were about £200

On my 2018 R-Dynamic black were standard. Red was an upcharge. Not a real fan of the black.

That is why I thought red was premium.
My 2021 R-Dynamic cme with black as standard.
Seems illogical to me that black is standard on the less expensive car but an upcharge on the R.
I do realize that the calipers are different sizes but paint is paint!!

LOL, indeed. In the end, it's about taste and preference, isn't it? I gladly paid $510 to have black calipers and, quite literally, would have plugged my nose and swallowed if I had had to order my F-Type with red calipers and it would have ALWAYS bothered me...to the point where I am quite certain I would have bought a can of Krylon paint and simply painted them black upon delivery. Simply have never like red calipers. Fortunately, it was an option and would have paid $2000...but don't tell JLR.

I thought that the standard brake pads turn the rotors (and wheel) black for NO CHARGE? <<DUCKS>>

Originally, black was the color of the High Performance brakes (standard on the V6S), and black was also the color of the Super Performance brakes (standard on the V8S, optional on the V6S.) Unless you got the Performance Package, in which case you got red calipers with the Super Performance brakes on the V6S or V8S. Clear? At least, this is what my 2014 brochure shows, though I'm sure they changed it later. Not sure I've ever seen black calipers with Super Performance brakes.

In my case, red calipers would look lousy with the Salsa Red, so I'm glad they were black.

Laughing.....my car has black calipers and chrome accents.

Porsche adds chrome to the GT3 touring and they don't do random things......so chrome is the next thing to go up (I actually really like it and the gt3 touring looks way better with the chrome than if it had black window molding).

I actually prefer the black calipers and the chrome window trim...more true to the E-type heritage and seemingly more timeless to my eye. All of the variants are good and I would like read calipers too....but not sure on the blacked out trim....the chrome makes the car look lighter to my eye...less brutal and less delicate. Same for the 992 GT3 Touring. Either way you are in a timeless car with perhaps the most beautiful design of the last 20 years bar none.

Yes, my Super Performance brakes are red on my 16 V6S. Looks sharp imo, although I don't think I've ever fully exercised them.

Interesting. I don't think I've ever seen seen black calipers with Super Performance brakes, either, but I might have just assumed they standard. I have the Performance Pack, so they automatically came as red. I personally haven't had an issue mixing with Salsa. (Of course, my wife always insisted on buying my ties.)

My 2022 has red calipers, they're an up charge on the monroney label. ($510 I want to say?)

Not sure what Monroney is but what I read was just the opposite - black costs more.
Do they really charge more for black just depending on the model??

Super performance brakes in black on mine here. Red was standard and black was optional.

So glad they're black because I think it looks so much better. Never really got the point of red calipers and also chose matte black when I painted the calipers on my last Jag. IMHO red calipers are just way too ubiquitous and look really good on very few cars.

I don't know about other countries, but here in the UK all of the P300 models (base, R-Dynamic and First Edition) come with silver calipers as standard, with either black or red calipers being a £2660 option as the calipers and discs are upgraded to a larger size (380mm front, 376mm rear)
All of the P450 R-Dynamic variants come with black calipers as standard, with red calipers adding £325.
The 'R' variant comes with red calipers, with black calipers costing £325. Alternatively, you can upgrade to carbon ceramic for £7600 with yellow calipers, an option that isn't available on the R-Dynamic models.

EDIT: There's also an accessory listed, on the P450 models, for 'Jaguar Performance Calipers - Performance, red', which is a £1580 option. There is zero detail on the Jag website to explain what the difference is between those calipers and the ones that come with the car as standard, other than "Performance inspired cosmetic upgrade of red caliper front and rear.", which would suggest it is just paint. The part number is T2R9300 if anybody wants to check. This is not an available accessory on the 'R'.

It is daft that the change of colour from one standard to another costs £325, but we live in a world where some manufacturers charge customers for changing the gauge colour on a digital gauge cluster.

The window sticker in the US is called a Monroney Sticker.

There are, or were, three brake options originally (forgive me if I get the names wrong, I'm getting old!): standard with small discs front and rear, Performance with large front and small rear discs, and Super Performance with big discs front and rear. A while back someone posted and image from the catalogue showing the three brake types with their red or black options. I don't know if the current range still has all three.

^^^ For the UK at least, on the current line-ups there seems to be just the 2 brake sizes available with traditional discs:

P300 (all variants) - 355mm front discs, 325mm rear discs with silver calipers. 380mm front, 376mm rear discs are available as a £2660 cost option with either red or black calipers (for the same price!).
P450 (all variants) - 380mm front discs, 376mm rear discs, black calipers with red as a £325 cost option.
R - 380mm front discs, 376mm rear discs, red calipers with black as a cost option. Carbon ceramic brakes available as a £7600 cost option.

Although the size of the discs isn't mentioned on the base model P300, the online configurator image does not change when you select a larger wheel for it (to then accommodate the larger disc option) and it then shows the discs as 355/325mm.

The following animation runs through the various looks, based on a P300. It starts with the standard 355mm discs from 18" wheels up to 20", then the 2 disc sizes on a 19" wheel and then the same on a 20" wheel. There are no other brake options available on the build configurator on the UK site (other than the ceramic discs on the R). Yes, I have far too much time on my hands . The key thing, though, is that there is no difference in brake disc size moving up to the 19" wheel from 18" and the disc size IS mentioned when you select 19" wheels.

As to the original question, well, this is what the red and black calipers look like on the R in BRG and the 3 main shades of blue (I've left Constellation out as it's VERY similar on the site to Portofino Blue)

Personally, I prefer the black calipers on all but the Velocity Blue but everybody has their own tastes (I left the calipers black on my own Portofino Blue P450)
