I suspect that Stohlen's comment was just a metaphor.

Everybody thinks they're riding their beasts hard and putting them away wet. In truth, I don't care who you are, your driving privileges would be revoked it you were really punishing the car as on a race track. You're not.

I'm with Stohlen . . . a lot of people waste a lot of money for no good reason.

Yes, you are correct. Obviously I don't mean for someone to go put gear oil in their engine or something like that. My point was rather that any name brand 0W-20 full synthetic oil is going to suit the vehicle just fine. We replace the oil because of contamination prior to using up the additives in the oil, so it really doesn't make any difference on if the oil meets a relatively arbitrary specification from an engineering perspective. Any standard oil is going to be close enough to OEM specification as long as it is name brand, and additive requirements change as the engine ages anyways so that's really a moot point.

Based on the printouts I've gotten from my Jag dealer, they haven't used whichever Castrol it is that meets the JLR spec on my two oil changes so far.

I'll have to revisit the reports. One was Castrol Edge (but not Pro), the other was a different Castrol.

My dealer no longer stocks the OE (gold bottle) and I was told that Jaguar sends them the regular Castrol Edge (silver bottle)

I found the following from Castrol's website.

http://oilselector.castrol.com/c/uk/...SC-%282014-%29

It says refer to dealer.
If you do a google search you'll see all over that JLR endorses Castrol Edge "Professional."

https://www.jaguar.com/about-jaguar/castrol.html

Personally, I've never worn an engine out / had any catastrophic problems due to incorrect oil usage and find that it would be hard to pin it down to not using a specific oil.

I suppose next oil change I'll get will be 7,500 miles later and see what the TBN is on it.

Is it pointless to do the TBN test on it without having a virgin oil sample to compare to?

All that garbage aside, it would be nice not having to spend $200.00 for an oil change so often.

According to Blackstone, the TBN needs to be over 1.0. My sample at 518 miles measured at 6.4. It's hardly a virgin sample, as those were 518 miles of break-in. With my C30, I only had TBN measured some of the time. Initially, I was trying to determine what the proper change interval was for my usage. One of the tests showed TBN down to 2.4 at 5K miles, but that was still looking OK for 7.5K. Once I confirmed that the factory recommendation was acceptable, I was less concerned.

The recommended change interval for the F-Type is one year or 16,000 miles. I typically run about 15K a year, and I have never gone that far between oil changes.

This is the first car I've owned that did specify a break-in procedure, but did not specify a break-in service. My plan at this point is to change the oil soon, then monitor it over the year, perhaps every 5K miles. I want to get a feel for how heavily the oil gets stressed.

I am sending two samples of oil off to Blackstone today (0 miles and 3750 miles). With the 0 mile sample, we will at least have a baseline against which to compare all other samples using the OEM(recommended) oil.

Given the fact that the bottle advertises "Titanium Technology", there is no wonder why the titanium levels have been high on the samples recorded to date.

FWIW, my father used to have a Ford F350 Turbo Diesel that he towed a rather large travel trailer around the country. He used nothing but Amsoil, and never changed oil until he was told it was time by Blackstone when he got got his sample results back. I remember there were times he was over 20,000 miles before he changed. (Although he did change the filters and top off with fresh oil in between changes)

A solid strategy. I will be analyzing oil and changing filters every 5-6k. Will change oil based on Blackstone recommendation or 18k, whichever comes sooner.

Default Baseline Oil Analysis

For those of you doing oil analyses to monitor for appropriate change interval, you might find the following report useful. It is from a virgin oil sample of the OEM recommended oil: Castrol Edge Professional E 0W-20.

For a 0W-20, that's actually just a bit heavy. The spec calls for 8.0 vs the reported 9.35. Still within range.

I'm at about that mileage now, so will pull a sample this weekend for comparison, and also for comparison with my 500 mile sample and your zero mile one.
