Blown Engine - 2017 F Type R
Hi Guys,
So as you know I have a 2017 F Type R and my engine died at 4,200 miles. A lot of you guys blamed me because of the bad tune even though it doesn't have a tune anymore after 2,000 miles.
My mechanic confirmed that it is "ENGINE OIL STARVATION" after opening up the engine. Our car has a bad OIL PAN design and JAGUAR keeps avoiding this issue and blaming it on people who tuned their cars.
Jaguar Newport Beach and Jaguar Corporate didn't help me with the cost of replacing the engine or the repairs. They blamed it on my tune but its clearly engine oil starvation.
Clearly this is a known issue and it is disappointing how JAGUAR NEWPORT BEACH and JAGUAR CORPORATE handled this issue. The JAGUAR Corporate Supervisor and the Service Manager at Newport Beach were screaming at me and blaming it on me that It was the tune that caused it even though they didn't open the engine. Talk about professionalism and corporate responsibility. I'm a first time Jaguar Owner and clearly would not own any more JAGUAR or LAND ROVER products after this.
My mechanic advised that we should replace our oil every 3,000 miles.

Your comment about jaguar avoiding the issue and blaming it on people who tune their cars would infer this only happens on tuned cars... unlikely that that is the case if it is indeed a bad oil pan design, which I also doubt. I am afraid you're probably just a victim of circumstance; you can fight it, but you probably won't win. That is unfortunate.
My experience has been very poor with Jaguar customer service as well. I am of the opinion that they don't really care about their customers even when they are partially/mostly at fault, so I am not surprised by this result. Anything to make/save a buck. That being said I highly doubt they screamed at you, unless you screamed first.
Also your last comment about your mechanic throws away any validity to his diagnosis above...

Sorry to hear about your situation. My personal experience with my Jaguar dealer has been excellent. They have backed up their product 100%. What does the F-Type warranty say about cars with a tune? Did you break the warranty by doing that?

It does?
It is? Got some other examples?
I thought it was an oil pan issue. How would changing the oil at 3K miles help?
So what's the other side of the story.

I think that the lesson here is to not to f**k about with the engine while under warranty. Better to be safe than sorry, as is your case. Lets face it, if there was an underlying engine issue then there would be floods of owners with blown engines, sorry but I'm with Jaguar in blaming the tune. Often engine manufacturers purposely put flat spots in the engine management system to limit engine power in certain circumstances to reduce the chance of engine damage . Examples of this are at low RPM to encourage you to drop a gear rather than loading the engine at low RPM with subsequent low oil pressure. Along comes the tuner who says 'I'll get rid of those annoying flat spots' and hey presto, the owner starts to overload the engine when the oil pressure is low, exactly what the engine designer designed out. And you wonder why they deny responsibility? just wonder how much the tuner has spent on research on his tunes, diddly squat I would say, and as such your engine is toast.

Wow. OP I feel for you a little bit, but I am having a hard time not thinking that you brought this on yourself. https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/f...100-hp-178358/
I hope you get it sorted out, but a lot of forum members were trying to warn you in that thread.

So sorry to read about your situation
I have a 17 model R coupe and decided NOT to tamper with the cars electronic ECU programming as it is too high of a risk on a new vehicle, which is protected by warranty. If the engine goes on my car, and warrenty is denied due to installed software, I'd be up a creek with no padel. My worst hypothetical scenario actually happened to you which I'm so sorry to hear about your troubles.

How can the dealership on one hand admit there is a fault in the design of the oil pan and on the other say the tune caused the failure?
