Default Brake Upgrade

So finally found a brembo style brake upgrade for our cars at affordable price on aliexpress...less than 1k for fronts including rotors. I know made in China but, I have seen these in person they are impressive.

I like the dual piece floating rotor design. Certainly look nice and appear to be decent quality. Price is great. Still, scary to buy product without a history.

Brakes are one of those things that "going cheap" is not a good strategy.

Changing the entire brake system on the wheel isn’t something I am at all interested in changing on my “R”. However finding a brand of brake pad that doesn’t coat my wheels in brake dust is very much on my list once the OEM pads need to be replaced. My wheels are royal PITA to clean and brake dust all over them changes the color from a deep black to a dusty gun metal grey color after just a few miles. It is one of the minor complaints I have about an otherwise outstanding performance car.

Your best to find a high quality ceramic brake pad. They are low dust but, you will sacrifice some performance.

Agreed! There are quality ceramic pads out there. Ceramic vs organic or semi-metallic which will have a bit more bite, but will wear faster and produce lots of messy brake dust. Unless you’re tracking the car, I’d recommend ceramic brakes too.

Many of us switched to Porterfield R4-S pads for that reason. They take some drying when wet, and the initial bite isn't quite as hard as the OEM pads, but a good compromise.

The performance aspect isn’t a concern as I never track my car AND so the low dust pads don’t diminish the stopping performance exceedingly. The time I spend cleaning my wheels is at least 25 min. every time I wash the car. While that doesn’t sound all the long when you wash a car 2-3 times a month it adds up. Plus it is just tedious and tiresome.

A coat of wax on the wheels makes the brake dust just slide off - between washings you can just wipe the brake dust off using any cloth - but a microfibre cloth works best. The wax also prevents the brake dust baking onto the wheel finish. Ceramic coating would also solve the problem.

Ordered the front brakes. Will keep you posted once installed and track tested.

Did you purchase these in the hopes of a performance gain? I found the OEM package to be extremely capable on the track (4 events total so far). I've purchased replacement Porterfield pads but have yet to find the need to replace them. I've run 4 track events with perhaps 90% - 95% braking with no issues. In stock trim my mph was from about 142/143 mph off the back strait down to (guessing) 50mph or so. With the updated ECU tune and pulley, that was 146/148 consistently. I never faded at all and each was 30 minute run sessions here in Palm Beach County, FL. As such, I've been lazy and just live with the cleaning of the wheels.

Purchased mostly for looks lol! If there is a gain that would be a plus. Going to track the car in the spring and will report my findings. Agreed the stock brakes are very capable with the right pads.

I used the R4 on road courses for a couple of seasons now. Expensive, and missing the spring clips attaching the pad to the caliper piston bores like regular F Type pads have - so they rattle all the time. Noisy as a bus when braking at low speeds on the street, but they maintain full performance and zero fade for entire 25 min sessions. Pedal feel is very progressive - even in street driving the progressive feel is maintained, and stopping power even when cold (and cold ambient) is superior to the grabby OEMs which due to that gives the illusion of stopping power. Have not tried the R4S though.

As a BTW - I read somewhere that Padgett makes the factory OEM pads. Padgett has been in the business a long time. They have a well reputed product.
