Default CA SMOG - who will be first

I have no doubt the F-Type will pass smog tests when required, but I'm curious to see if the Smog checks will exit out correctly or if we'll all have battery issues after a SMOG check. The first of the F-type in CA will be coming up on their first SMOG check soon.

That's not really a problem; nearly everyone here know how to fix the situation if it happens, with the hazard light staying on as a tipoff before the battery dies. What will start producing unhappy threads are those with tuned engines...

Nearly everyone *here* knows about the OBDC problem, but I expect a significant number of owners are not here. If people start complaining of dead cars after a mandated inspection then perhaps JLR will finally address the problem. Perhaps instead the State will update their equipment and/or procedures. I still contend that an OBDC connection that is cut without the expected termination protocols is a reasonably expected condition and should be handled gracefully. Not handling common error conditions in a way that leads to denial of service (dead car) is either a design defect or an implementation defect (bug) and should be acknowledged and fixed.

As for tuned cars, that's a separate issue and one that we should have heard more on already. I'm surprised we haven't. Whether we hear unhappiness depends on a number of factors, and those remain remain a mystery (unless I missed something).

The tune or exhaust change won't fail you, the cats will if they visually check. Unless you pay extra😉😅. I didn't have a problem with any draining issues back when I did mine

When I got my car shipped from out of state I had to smog it. It passed, but triggered the battery drain issue.

Mufflers won't and cats will, but I haven't heard anything authoritative about whether a tune still in place will lead to failure.

That's what I'm afraid of.

I had my 2018 R smogged about 3 years ago when I imported it from Washington state. It didn't cause any issues at all.

I mean it was a simple fix since I knew of the issue. Just went home, detached the negative for 10 seconds, and replugged it.

I just had my car CA Smog checked today. I asked the tech to make sure that he close out the session on his computer BEFORE disconnecting the OBD2 cable, which he did. I checked the car about a 1/2 hour after I locked it at home and all is good. I also don't have a tune on it so I can't answer any of those questions. And by the way I am still on my 2013 OEM battery although I do use a Ctek battery maintainer all the time when I'm not driving it, I hope I didn't just jinx myself.

10 secs is not enough time for most people/modules to reset. Suggest 5mins to be sure.
