Default Can anyone tell me why my engine light came on?

Hi folks,

I bought my 2016 F-Type RWD V6 3.0L Supercharged (20,961 miles) three weeks ago. I got the first engine light three weeks ago took it to the dealer and they said it was an EVAP system issue. They fixed it for me. Last night i started my car - engine was reving by its self and then went down. A few moments later the engine light came on.

Can anyone please help me out? I’m stressed

Need an Autel to read the codes. CEL after a cold start is usually EVAP.

any auto parts place like O’Reilly’s or auto zone can read the codes for free. You can then look the code up on your favorite search engine. Good luck!

FYI, if the engine light is on solid, it’s safe to drive the car. If it’s flashing, pull over immediately and shut it down.

I had a similar issue with my 2016. Intermittent high idle at start. Occasionally accompanied by a fluctuating idle and check engine light. There's a code, forgot the number, but it references a high idle detected. There's an update/program available at your friendly local Jaguar dealer that fixes it, my cost was 1 hour labor.

I had a leak in the evap system, then a problem with the gas cap, both fixed under warranty. You really need to get the code to know more, but you may need to reset the battery module afterwards (disconnect battery negative for ~15 seconds) to avoid the car not going to sleep.

your dealer could have just cleared (erased) the codes without doing anything to fix the problem, then for example, once the EVAP monitor runs again and sets a fault code ( won’t happen immediately) the check engine light will come back on.
The best bet, as others have suggested, is to either buy a generic scan tool which can be had for as low as $30 or go to AutoZone and get the stored code(s) read (interrogates the engine module).
Only when you know the code and can cross reference with an easy Internet search as to what the code means, can you determine what the problem is. People on this forum can help once we know what codes you have.
If it turns out to be one of the EVAP system codes like a leak, then you march straight back to the dealer and say, what did you fix exactly or did you just erase the codes?
