Car jerks when put in drive every morning
#61
I have 14k miles on a V8S that has been my daily driver for 2 years. I have absolutely no shunt / jerk or any type of sensation when putting the car into D when starting up in the morning. This absolutely would not be normal behavior.
I used to own a BMW 335i that also had a ZF gearbox (albeit totally different unit to the F Type). This gearbox had a well documented problem with the mechatronic unit that gave exactly these symptoms - a thud as you engage D, almost as if you have been hit from behind. My car had this problem. Just do a search for "BMW 335i mechatronic problem.
Not saying that is the case with this gearbox, however just using it to illustrate some units may develop problems that other owners don't experience.

One of my classic cars kicks like a mule when put into reverse when cold. My understanding is that in that case it is tied to engine RPMs. Higher RPMs, more it kicks. When warm, and with low idle RPMs it shifts smoothly.
Considering that F-type, when started cold, will have about 15 seconds of 'warm up' high RPMs, have you tried waiting until it drops to normal mode to see if it still kicks?

I think we have already established that for several of us, it is not an rpm related issue. There is something else that is causing it that has nothing to do with engine speed. It only happens if the it's been sitting overnight/several hours. If it's sat for a few hours, long enough to cool to the point where it high idles upon startup, it doesn't do it.

Mine hasn't done it in ages, but since finding that bulletin, it occurred to me that it last happened last winter...so if it starts happening again this winter, then that fits nicely with the problem description in the bulletin. Will find out soon enough.

2017 Base Unicorn here. I do not wait for the idle to settle down, just take my foot off of the brake and go into reverse, no jerk, just eases out of the garage. I know, reverse not forward, but still...
And I swear that mine starts off in first all the time - maybe compensating for only having 340 hp ;-)) when I got it.
Oh - its obvious what the problem is on the car in the video - the steering wheel is on the wrong side!!
