Default Is Castrol NA nuts?

I read a number of the threads about oil and oil consumption and looked around for the right Castrol E 0W-20 to have some just in case. Of course I did not find it so I contacted Castrol and they told me that that oil is only available at Jaguar dealers.
I did find a couple of guys on Ebay selling 5 or 6 quarts at less than outrageous prices, but seriously, why would there only be one oil that meets the spec for our cars and only available at Jaguar dealers? This is a new one for me.

several users have reported their dealers didn't even use this oil during scheduled service

I saw that but if all of the oil changes are done by the dealer, you would think there would be no warranty quarrel. If I need to top up, I could probably get away with most any all synthetic, but I am going to try to get some of the "right stuff" as a matter of honor.

No other manufacturer makes them, yet. Don't blame Castrol.

Don't hold me to it but supposedly the Castrol Edge Professional OE that is sold at JLR dealers is "microfiltered" compared to the Castrol Edge Profressional thats sold at a fraction of the cost at your local autoparts store, WalMart, etc. Other than the microfiltration...its the same.

The whole microfiltration makes sense to me as the tolerances in the engines are very tight.

But again....this is what I heard.

I cannot even find Castrol Edge Professional at any of the auto stores, only Castrol Edge and Edge Extended Life.

.
The tolerances are no different/tighter than other contemporary engines. Even if it was imnitially 'microfiltered', oil becomes contaminated as soon as the engine is started. The filter removes excessively large particles.

It is generally agreed that the spec oil has a UV dye in it, but if I added a qt of anything, the oil would still show dye.

;The prescribed stuff is available at the dealer for $11/liter. Not worth the time wasted to look elsewhere to save $25 on 5 qts.

Are Castrol NA mad?

Possibly. But their decision to not stock an oil used by a very limited number of vehicles for servicing only looks financially sound.

Now: that Jaguar NA specify said oil, rather than something similar, for a very limited number of vehicles (when - apochraphally - even their Licensed Reoresentative don't use it for servicing), does appear to be. Unless they're looking to avoid Warrantee Claims...

Castrol does this for many vehicles. When the E46 BMW M3's changed their oil spec, Castrol was the only supplier of the weight for many years and it could only be purchased via BMW. It changed over time as Mikey eluded to above. It just take time for other oil manufactures to decide if it's profitable to make that weight.

I thought it wasn't just the weight, but STJLR.51.5122, whatever that is.

There are lots of 0W-20 oils, synthetic, out there. It would be interesting to know what is so special about this oil except the UV dye. My nearest dealer is 2.5 hours away so just dropping in to buy a liter of oil is not a real option.

Post #35 on the Blackstone Oil Report thread is an analysis of a virgin sample of the prescribed oil. The only difference from other oils is a much increased level of titanium in the additives package.

I just had my first oil changed at 1K. What is really nuts is 16K recommended schedule. On a performance car that get pushed around.

I had a chat with service manager during deliver, he told me he have seen couple engine failures where chain and chain tensiometer failed. Probably due to waiting too long to change oil...

Who would pay $27 for a quart of oil? Why would anyone think they can charge that? As I said, Ebay has some better options. I suppose you could even call up a Jaguar dealer and ask the parts dept to ship some, if they have quarts.

Meh, the JLR engine is so special, it requires a unique oil?

Highly doubtful, I'm sure mobil 1 would work just fine. JLR Razor blades for your JLR razor I'd say. But warranty...
