Default changes to f-type exhaust over the years?

hi guys

test drove a v8 coupe on weekend, an my15 build australian spec car, and for all the talk and videos i've watched of the ott crackles and pops, i could hardly hear any of it when pottering around with valve open

and absolutely nothing like in the video below

for all the f-type experts, has jag neutered the exhaust over the years?

does anyone have any pics of the stock exhaust? google images didn't turned up anything.

i'm hoping it's a simple case of jag adding some resonators in the centre pipe rather than tweaking the ecu fuel cut to reduce the over run pops and bangs

Mine is MY15, but V6 convertible. And it is Australian and it sounds amazing.

A couple of observations
1. Much more noticeable with the roof down. If you were driving a coupe I assume you won't hear as much as you do outside the car.
2. Even with the exhaust on if you drive the car smoothly and don't get up it is noticeable but not dramatic.
3. The pops and crackles on the Overrun definitely seem to be variable depending on engine temp etc, haven't quite figured it out yet, but sometimes it pops all the time other times not so much.

Next time put the windows down put it in dynamic mode and shifter to sports, use the paddles and get up it. Particularly good in tunnels

Did you have Dynamic mode switched on? Note that while they're driving slowly, 'pottering is not what they're doing

Windows down and plenty of buildings will also help...

the car was very quiet from inside

back at the dealer he did rev it up and from outside it was loud, but didn't make the same crackles, if any at all

i recently put an armytrix exhaust on my daily driver, a 2015 audi s3, and it's alot louder on the crackle then the v8 coupe was

tbh i was really disappointed with the sound

i'm stepping out of an 800hp modified r35 gtr. i've conceded that nothing for sane money will provide the same acceleration, so instead i figure ill trade power for something that has more character in the engine/exhaust sound

im waiting to see if the dealer can let me take their demo for an extended drive. i'll have a play with the settings, but from what i recall, i did have it in dynamic mode with exhaust open

Then try to hook up with OzRisk here on the forum, he's in Melbourne with an F-Type R, maybe see what his sounds like.

If you don't mind a convertible, the F-Type R tune can also be flashed into a V8S, same driveline and exhaust system on the V8S.

pretty sure i saw OzRisk's car at a local car show last weekend, but didn't see anyone near the car - bummer as i would have liked to have had a chat

re convert, ill be ordering a new car as i'm very fussy with spec, not to mention the huge options list which would make it almost impossible to find correct spec used

plus i really like the roofline of the coupe

for my car ... all of the crackles and pops happen when in normal driving mode with the active exhaust switched on. drive in 2-3rd gear rev it out at 1/2ish throttle to about 4k-5k rpm and just let off the gas pedal.

i don't get as much of it when in dynamic mode.

this makes sense

dynamic mode i assume makes the throttle more sensitive, so 20% throttle pedal travel now equals 50% throttle for example

given the crackle is cause by spark/ignition cut, the more you load the throttle pedal, the louder it would be

cheers guys, but now i really need to have another drive

Are you sure you didn't drive the car with the active exhaust turned off?

It's ridiculously easy to make the car pop and crackle when it's on.

No they have not. Having a vert I can tell you that just putting the top up and leaving the windows down you can barely hear anything even with the exhaust open. I had the same issue in my XKR-S I coould hear nothing inside. People tell me how loud and awesome my car sounds but I cannot hear much inside. What you see in the video is them driving by walls and buildings when the exhaust sound bounces off something. Find an overpass or tunnel and give it a listen with the windows down.

Here is a pic of my entire V8S exhaust ....

I noticed that my exhaust got louder after 1,000 miles. Also on automatic mode, is not as crazy. Best noise is in S mode, with manual shifting.

As someone mentioned, you don't get many pops in Dynamic.

Finally, i noticed that the exhaust is much louder after cold start and dims down once the mufflers get hot.

I guess that's another big difference between the "Active Exhaust" system and what used to be the standard '14-'15 "Sport Exhaust" on base cars with no valves to open and close. The same pipes with the open and closable valves are open all the time on the base system.

My non-active exhaust car is much louder with a lot more popping and crackling in "Dynamic" mode. Perhaps it's my imagination, but it does seem to be getting louder with more mileage. My wife and everyone else in my circle of acquaintances and friends all think it's too loud.

I believe the reason they get louder with age has to do with a glass pack component breaking down. Eventually they will be effectively straight pipes in bypass mode when all the glass comes out. (Per the diagrams I have seen, there is a small glass pack located within the larger muffler that is part of the exhaust path only in bypass mode).

I have to re stuff my glass packs on my Guzzi every few thousand miles. They sell the packing material at the bike shops, either loose or in a woven mat. The mat type lasts a little longer. Both sound good when freshly stuffed.

Given the location, It would be s complete PITA to get into the glass packs on the F-Type. I think we will see aftermarket mufflers to address this fairly soon.

ahhh i've done a glass pack oem muffler removal before on a previous car - sliced the muffler open, removed it, and welded close

The inside versus outside and roof up or down really makes a difference. Fortunately I get to keep roof down a lot. Our Maserati has same problem, I really notice Ferrari sound when I'm outside car as my wife pulls away versus driving it. But I never tired of the pops in the Jag!
