Default Check engine fault, CEL.

Just 2000 miles on my new 2016 Base F-Type. Out for a drive yesterday 70 miles from home and the amber engine warning light lit up. I tried restarting the car a couple of times with no change. Drove it home with seemingly no change in power. I called and made an appointment with the dealer for Tuesday, 140 miles away in Denver. I'm planning to drive it in for that appointment, don't think it necessary to have it towed. The Owners Manual says it is OK to drive and is related to the emissions system, but I don't plan to drive it any more between now and then. Anybody have experience with this on an F-Type?

Did you get gas that day? If you did it could be a loose gas cap

Do you have a code scanner? Or, perhaps an Autozone which will pull codes for free? Always nice to know the exact code and decide on how to proceed from there, especially if the dealer isn't close.

Yep, I did. And, the gas cap was the first thing I checked; it was fine. I drove about 1-1/2 hours, the 70 miles before it showed up. But thanks.

No code scanner. Good thought, but no Autozone here. We do have a Napa Auto Parts. I could check with them tomorrow. Thanks.

I've had this happen a couple of times, only once though on a new car.. I think it was a faulty ox. sensor.

I had the CEL light come on a number of times in the first year. I've had 2 O2 sensors replaced (a known Jag issue), and the evaporative purge valve. But it's been fine for the past 15K miles.

With the coincidence of a fresh fuel fill, my money is on the evaporative purge valve. As a side note to anyone who doesn't know - don't overfill the tank. That exposure is probably heightened by the filler tube issues (esp in CA).

As said here, unfortunately this is fairly common issue on F-Type. Couple of new Oxygen Sensors will soon have your sorted. My MY14 had the same issue.

Thanks to everybody. I don't think I overfilled the tank because I stopped filling on the first click after I handheld the nozzle. But...? I'll give you an update after my dealer visit on Tuesday.

Having a good OBD II code reader is absolutely mandatory if an owner wants to participate in DIY at any level. Most cost less than the gas burned during a trip to/from a dealer.

Default CEL diagosed.

I took my F-Type into the dealer today for the CEL. They diagnosed a failed O2 sensor and replaced it. I chose to wait for the car. They repaired the car and delivered it back to me hand washed and vacuumed in about an hour while we enjoyed their customer lounge.

Just about impossible to overfill the tank because if you try and put one ounce more after it clicks off, it spills out.
