Default Coolant Expansion Tank Bleed Screw

Does anyone know what size the bleeder screw on the expansion tank is (length and threading)? I need to replace mine, I dropped it in the engine bay and cannot find it even after removing the underbelly trays. If someone has replaced theirs before can you let me know if you found a replacement? I can only find BMW ones, and Jaguar does not appear to sell these separately. Thanks.

I just took mine off so I could measure it for you.
Total length 19 mm.
Thread length 11 mm.
Thread width 13 mm.
Thread pitch 5 turns over 11 mm = 2.2.
All measurements rough as guts using a plastic ruler and my Mark 1 Eyeball (not the most reliable instrument these days) so take these measurements with a yuge grain of salt!

Thank you! After I tried sizing a few different bolts I though it was an M14-2.0. Your measurements make me think I'm on the right path. I have a few stainless and plastic options showing up in the next couple of days. In the interim, the slightly undersized bolt wrapped in silicone tape seems to be holding up fine as a temporary measure.

I ordered a few options and found a correct replacement. It's a Land Rover Part, LR055301. There may be other Jaguar/Land Rover bleeder screws that fit but this one will definitely work if anyone ever needs a replacement.

The coolant expansion tank is a Ford part so it's likely that would be another source for parts if it could be determined which model Ford it's used on
There also seems to be an aluminium version of that Land-rover part

It will fit. I found the alum one and have it installed. No worry about overtighten or heat degradation. Only thing is be careful when engine is warm. That alum plug gets HOT and i have touched it by accident more than once. The website you got the alum plug from has quite a selection of parts even though they are rover based. A lot of underhood, engine and sensors cross over to jaguar

Great. Glad to know. I ordered some that I thought would fit (BMW) and no joy, so really grateful for your assurance. I almost went with the Rover ones, but I read somewhere that the BMW ones would work. So I lost a couple of days. Right now the car is parked in the carport and I put electrical tape over the hole where the screw was. It basically had shorn off. I had to use an allen wrench to carefully remove the headless threaded part.

Thanks for the caveat on the metal.

Yes, it was BP Utah for the alloy. Offly they charge shipping through eBay, but not direct. So I went direct. The plastic one is coming from Carrolton, TX.

UPDATE: I received the alloy bleed screw and it turned right in. I tightened it as tightly as it would go without forcing it. Used a nickel to do so — as recommended.

I ran the car with the hood up and the heat on 83º with then fan on almost high for a while, then closed the hood and turned the fan speed up to high and the heat to 85º for a bit, also took a short drive.

The temperature gauge behaved normally — smack dab in the middle — and there is not evidence so far of any leakage.

I have shut it down and will go out to look at it again in a bit.

Once it cools down I will check the expansion tank to see if the level has dropped and it needs fluid. It will be a surprised if not as it lost a good cup at least when the plastic bleed screw top blew off.

Thanks again to all for your help, and the recommendation on the part in the first place.

UPDATE: 01/24/2021

Thanks TM1238, Paul_59 and scottjh9.

I followed your instructions and all seems Hoyle, will check after cool down, and monitor throughout the week.

Here are photos of the part installed and the packaging in case anyone else needs one of these. I got it on ebay from Pritish Parts Utah for $19.99. I also ordered a plastic one for back up.

Again, my thanks.

FH

Cool! Do they come in green? Of course, one must color coordinate.

Please help,

I'm trying to find the 13mm bleed screw for the f-type/xk etc, can you confirm this one is the larger screw?

I've ordered a screw under same part number and
It's 10mm, way too small

Glad you were able to sort it but this thread caused me to think (more than usual!).
First - I had never noticed the bleed screw.
Second - now wondering if I need to bleed air routinely or only if system is flushed.?

Hi, I have an XJ8, so not sure why I received your message. However, here is the part that I used. You could contact them to find out the size and whether or not it will work for you. Best of British. FH

I bought that one, it does not fit, it's too small.
