Default Crank pulley removal

Hi all, upgrading my base model 2017 with a new tune and crank pulley. Wondering if there is any trick to getting this pulley off. Engine just turns over as soon as I put some real pressure on any of the 6 bolts. What's a good way to prevent this?

Thanks!

i would say to put a socket on that center crank bolt and keep it still while you break the outer pulley loose. There is a whole lot more torque on that center than the others.

Excellent, thanks. That is what I had intended to do but wanted to verify it was ok.

Thanks for the pm btw, made an edit.

You will definitely need to use two sockets, one to hold the center and one to remove the torx. There is limited room in there, but many have done it (including myself) even in jack stands. Not fun time if you are dealing with red thread locker, which if you have a black crank pulley, I will assume you will. It took me an hour to get the 6 torx bolts out. Just be patient. Also keep in mind the secondary pulley is also held in with the 6 torx bolts that hold the main crank pulley in place. It is possible if you are not careful to have the secondary pulley come off and then you are dealing with needing to route and tension a second belt.

Nice, thanks for the tips. I am on jack stands and wondering where I'm going to find the room for that second socket lol. Be easiest to have a helper from the top if not for the hood. While I love the reverse opening it sure is a pain in the *** to work around.

I took a normal socket and used a piece of piping to extend the length of it or if you have a longer breaker bar you could use that for one of them. The other still needs to be longer to have the leverage needed to break the bolts loose. I will tell you that you will need to use the socket wrench the entire time to get the torx bolts out. They are in there tight and the thread locker does not help. Once out, you will want to clean them really good to get the old thread locker off.

I cound not find the required socket in my toolbox to hold the crankshaft bolt so I used a rubber strap wrench with the strap around the crank pulley when removing the bolts. Worked fine.

Make sure you chase the threads on the bolts and in the crankshaft with appropriate die and tap to remove the old thread locker or it will be very hard to put the bolts back in during reassembly.

Thanks for the replies guys. So I finally got a good look at the pulley and it appears the damn car already has a vap pulley!? Looks identical. See attached. Can anyone share a pic of theirs? This doesn't look like the picture of the oe pulley shown on vap's website.

Post #1 of this thread has pictures of stock and VAP pulleys. Looks like a VAP.

Note the stock pulley has a rubber vibration damper ring.

Ugh. So yup, previous owner did the tune n pulley. Should have known from all the cracks and pops on decel. Thing is, I checked with Stuart and gave him my vin before ordering....so if VAP didn't tune it, who is left?

I am pretty sure there was a least one other supplier of crank pulleys and tunes but the name escapes me. Maybe it was Veizo for the tunes and Eurotoys for the pulleys? Someone will come along and fill the correct names in I'm sure.

so is it confirmed that you have a VAP? I have a Mina Gallery plus tune not installed yet. I have not seen the pulley yet either. So that is a tuner as well

Well not confirmed by VAP yet but I can definitely confirm it's not the oe pulley....and appears identical to the VAP from what I can see. Good call on the Mina Gallery tune, I forgot about them...I'll reach out. When you get yours (assuming it's soon) would you mind posting a pic of your pulley?

Looks identical to my Eurotoys pulley.
So I'm going with RGPV6S, Eurotoys pulley and Viezu tune.
Or it could still have a VAP tune, I have a Eurotoys pulley and VAP tune, if you PM Chris or Stuart your VIN they can check if they have ever supplied a tune for that VIN.
Edit whoops - I missed that you have already checked with VAP!

Thanks! So I did some deep searching last night and found the for sale post for my car here on the forums. Guess what? VAP tune and pulley. Good to know, but a bit surprised they didn't catch it when I asked. Understandable I guess considering it was 2020. Thanks for everyone's help, even if it was a massive waste of time lol...
