Default Custom Subwoofer Enclosures

Just curious about what people in the forum have designed and installed to replace the seat back factory subs with a aftermarket sub or subs in the rear. Let's see some pictures of some custom subwoofer enclosure installs.

I have the coupe. I have a 8 inch sub coming soon that I am going to try to mount in the space of the tub of the boot. Will be a few months in the making as going to have to feel my way through the install. That space is at least 11-12 litres or about o.5 cu ft so almost perfect for a 8 inch sub. Should fit nicely under the rear floor tray with some 1cm spacers under the edges to lift it a bit to give a bit of breathing room and for me can mount and be secured to the spare wheel screw in brace so can be removed easily.
I am not going to fibreglass it but if anyone is you could fill the well with thick carpet and then fill the well with expandable foam in a garbage bag and place a board over the top at floor level.this will they give you a positive cast of the space that you can fibreglass over the top of once removed. Creases in the carpet will leave a negative impression on the cast so won’t matter. Buy using thick carpet or spacers will give enough room for the fibreglass to not exceed maximum space available . Obviously arrange the carpet so the bottom is narrower than the the top so it can be removed.

The actual bin is about .7cuft - plenty of room for a nice 10". When you pull the bin out you'll see that there is even more space available without getting involved with custom fiber glassing anything. I'll be building a sealed enclosure for a Dayton Audio RSS265HO and don't expect to need any fiberglass work - just standard 3/4 mdf. I'll probably maintain the stock over board. Looking to get working on it with the next couple of weeks so will post pics.

You ae going to have a hard time getting enough airspace for a ported 10". What sub are you planning to use?

Using a JL 10TW3-D4. Should end up with about .75cuft.

.75 is good for sealed but that sub needs at least 1cuft net (after displacement) for a ported application.

where is everyone going to mount their amp?? I haven't got a fixed location in my head yet so thinking on top of the umbrella holder location at present or even in one of the back corners ???

also intending to mount sub-box on rubber nubbins/feet to decouple the sub from the car. Is that what everyone else is planning to do ?

Sorry Joel, I left part of the model number out, its a 10TW3-D4. Per JL specs .60 for ported 10TW3-D4. It's .95 for a ported 12TW3-D4

Here is the WinISD model for .75cu ft at with a 2.8 inch port 22.68in long tuned to 30Hz.

Probably going to mount near the factory amp location over the right wheel well, once setup you should not need access. I will mount a ACR-1 sub control for the Audio Control 300.1 up front to tweak bass if needed. Box is supported by wooden stand offs mounted to the spare well floor. It is decoupled by 1/8 felt furniture pads on the top of each stand off.

Ah yeah - 10TW3 vs 10W3 definitely makes a difference. You are going with the "shallow" version.

Nice job !
do you have any pictures of how you set it into the well ? What footings it is sitting on and any anchoring points ? Did you build a frame for it to sit on ??

thanks

What are the external dimensions of the enclosure? I have no idea how you managed to get .75 net internal space, especially after accounting for the volume of the port, without any fiberglass work to maximize space out of the storage area. Did you relocate that bank of relays in the back corner to free up space?

16.5x20.25x7. You just need to angle the right front corner to clear the well curve. Did not relocated relays but did move the Bosch module in the front right of the well. Not sure of battery location on pre 2020 but mine is left rear corner of the well.

I'll need to go look at my space again - I'll post a pic for comparison. I'm planning to be completely under the false floor so that takes away a few inches of depth but I still didn't think I could go much more than 8" external dimension depth. Yours is 16.5 deep (15"internal depth)?

Ah - I see now. I misread your dimensions somehow. Okay, so 5.5" internal depth. That's what I'm planning to go with, just not harvesting as much space around the perimeter as you to keep it simple.

There is a little more to be had but will required fiberglass get to get it all.
I would say a 12TW3 is doable below the floor covering.

The box is perched atop wood stand offs glued to the well floor with 1/8 felt furniture feet on top of them. The felt pads allow for decoupling from the well while alllowing the box to sit over the top of the power distribution box, studs, and other factory wiring. I will attach some pics to this post this evening.
Pic showing the Bosch Module relocated to the center. The fuse panel on the 2020 was moved from the leftside of the well closest to the battery to the left quarter panel behind a small removable panel.

Pic showing the wooden standoffs attached to the floor with the felt pads on top to decouple the box from the well floor. Each one is a slightly different height depending on the part of the floor it is mounted to in order to achieve a level perch for the box to sit on.

Pic showing the eco start module removed from its floor mount.

Pic showing the floor stud removed which was just holding the wiring harness in position. It has to go in order to get the box to slide back another inch or so. The Ground cable was also loosened and rotated back to the 7:00 position for clearence.

Dropping the box into position. Very tight and got to hit just the right angle to get it to slide in.

In position showing the front face clearances.

With the front floor panel dropped into place.

Showing how far back the box sits.

Pic showing the very minor trimming of the right rear floor panel for clearance.

Back trim panel installs over the rear of the box, very tight fit. The box will have to be removed in order to replace battery.
