Default Dash Cam Installed (DRONE XC)

After several months of research here and elsewhere online I finally have a dash cam installed in my F-Type. Took me a long time to find the right camera as F-Type's wind shield is small and sloped. Spoke to a local radio installer and they recommended the DRONE XC, below is a product link. The DRONE XC isn't typically found online as its preferred dealer installed by a shop but I knew it would be a good dash cam for the F-Type due to its design with the power cable coming out of the rear of the cam. The FITCAMX dash cam looks like another good alternative but didn't find anybody near me that could professionally install it and I don't trust myself to do the hard wiring for parking mode, lol. Cost me $665 total for the hardware and install. DRONE XC also has a rear camera but I skipped it as the rear view is small. So far I like the DRONE XC and its good to have the peace of mind that I can be able to record what is front of me in case of an accident.

Below is photos of the DRONE XC installed.

How are you pulling power for it?

It's hard wired to a fuse box which also allows it to do parking mode.

I also just installed a dash cam in my XKR. I used a fuse tsp thing for fuse #12 which goes to the visor vanity lights. Ground under the screw that holds the hood/bonnet releqse lever. This:

Fuse block in the driver side panel for an ‘15 XKR.

Fuse box. Can't do parking mode from the passenger mirror.

I considered parking mode when I installed my dashcam but worry that it drains the battery and causes gremlins. How long can the battery support it or does it have a separate backup battery of its own?

Nicely done…

Have had thoughts of doing this myself, but haven’t gotten around to it.

I have parking mode off as my F-Type is mostly garaged but will turn it on when its in public parking. No separate battery for the the DRONE XC and it has settings to protect the F-Type battery from draining below set voltages while in parking mode, most dash cams I've found also have these kinds of settings too.

It not having a separate battery would concern me a bit personally. These batteries are finicky at the best of times with just the normal things draining on it, but hopefully things work out well for ya.

For my use case I would only want to have monitoring while driving.

I researched into separate battery packs for dash cams as it seemed like it would be easier than hard wiring but didn't go with it for the following reasons.
  • DRONE XC doesn't support a separate battery pack.
  • Battery packs use lithium batteries and I don't trust them in my F-Type when parked in the outdoors heat out of fear they may explode or their lifespan would be degraded by the heat.
  • Charging the battery pack and placement inside the cockpit was a concern as space is already tight.
