Dealers aren’t doing transmission service?
Hi all, I called Jaguar Chicago, and Jaguar South Shore in Indiana, and the service advisors said they don’t do transmission service oil changes. Jaguar Chicago said it’s because it’s a lifetime fluid. Jaguar South Shore said they’ve only been open a few years and don’t have equipment for older cars, like my 2014 f-type.l, and since they only work on new jaguars, they don’t require transmission service.
I’m not sure I agree, but my 2014 has 36k miles, and feel like I need to get it done, and that I should have done it sooner.
I’d love to know if people are doing trans fluid changes and how much $ is fair.
thanks all

I called Jaguar Schaumburg, and after asking for my vin, and telling me they really don't do transmission service, they gave me a quote for $2000 in parts, and $600 in labor.
I'm specifically calling dealers first, because I still have an extended warranty which expires in october of this year, and prefer getting work done at the dealer until it expires. I did find some excellent diy writeups on this forum, so I may just have to wait until winter to do it myself or with some friends.
Cheers

I believe the consensus here is 100,000 mile interval. It does require a special JLR tool #305-452. And “Special” fluid which, I’d use Liquid Moly or Motul or Redline. Go to any good euro shop that also does BMW’s. Same ZF8.
You should be much more concerned about the rear diff. Fluid change at 50,000 and see if the pinion seal is leaking.

Thank you @SouthSider for the Hindsale shop recommendation, I will contact them. Also, thank you @Robtrt8 for the special tool & diff suggestion - I confirmed I had the diff done a few years ago (but forgot I did it).

A Jaguar (or any luxury class) facility is not really a true facility if it can't service models back at least 10 years. And in the newest cars, "transmission SERVICE" doesn't mean just not worrying about the :lifetime oil formula", it also means servicing/inspecting plugs, seals, and everything that holds and pushes that oil through your car. None of those metal and rubber portions have lifetime-rating like somebody's frankenstein oil.
I can understand a facility being honest with a potential customer and saying they literally don't have a person in their staff who was sent to Jaguar and educated on the workings of an E-type/XKR/whatever. I know the training must cost the dealer some hefty money. But just come clean and say so, don't jive the customer with any oddball excuses.
I don't mind having to hunt around for a legacy-knowledgeable dealer, as long as mechanics are being honest with me about how and why they can't service my older models.

Here are 18 pages of reports. 18 pages of people trying everything they can on ZF transmissions on JLR products. This is just one thread.
If you are such a Master Mechanic, please enlighten all of us.....

Transmission "feel" is, all mechanical things being equal, entirely subjective, and the fuzzy logic of modern units adapting shift points etc just complicates things. Changing your fluid before a recommended interval can be wasteful unless an actual issue exists.
Having been on both sides of the desk, I can tell you that most franchise dealers will not change your trans fluid just because you want them to. Horror stories abound in the business about customers self-diagnosing transmission problems and "just try changing it" and "now it's worse" etc.
You may want to do a service on your ZF8, you can do a drain and fill or change the pan, which from ZF has an integrated filter, but what about the torque converter? Can you get to that? Im not sure the ZF converter has a drain plug. There are fluid temperature parameters that are important during the procedure, also. You can get someone to do a BG type service with that pump device they use, it works ok. Whatever method is used, the amount drained and the amount filled is difficult to monitor. The expansion rate on trans. fluid is remarkable
I changed the fluid/filter on my BMW 330 ZF at about 150k miles, it made a difference, On my X5 I bought a pan and fluid kit from FCP Euro, but traded the crap box before I did it.
I do not anticipate ever servicing the trans. on my F-Type. Famous last words!
Now, let's discuss WHICH fluid to use!!

So far there is only Lifeguard8 for the ZF 8 speed. The older 6 speed ZF has several compatible fluids that work well besides Lifeguard6.
It is a bit expensive but since this 8 speed is used in so many cars hopefully it will come down in price.
Attached is a ZF transmission fluid document and no surprise they only recommend their own fluid.

And I have 3 x 4 litre bottles of Penrite ATF BMV, says right on the bottle "Lifeguard Fluid 6/8/9".
Bought a few months ago for less than 1/4 the price of 12 litres of Lifeguard 8.
Penrite make a range of ATFs but for the ZF 6 and 8 speeds it's gotta be the BMV flavour.
Being an Oz company dunno if you can get it in US/Canada.
