Door Sill Plate Removal

Door Sill Plate Removal
Does anyone know how to remove the brushed stainless steel door sill plates? I'd like to swap right for left and vice versa. Why you ask? Well, because the dealer scratched the driver side sill while the car was in for its first year service (among other things) and I don't want to look at the scratch every time I get in
The entire saga of the week long first service ordeal will be posted later after I gather my thoughts and have time to compose them (and myself.)

this is correct, and it is also correct that the sill plate cannot be removed without damage. I replaced mine because of scratching ( which is clearly not a warranty issue - why anyone would think it would be is beyond my comprehension)...as stated it requires heat, an instrument to separate the metal from the adhesive backing and ultimately you end up just pulling it off - -and this makes it unusable. Do not try to remove a sill plate without have a new one at hand.

Jaguar have used the same method of attaching tread plates for many years. They are bonded with a single length of double sided tape located as shown in the second diagram.
They are removed by carefully warming with a heat gun and gently prising free working from the end with a long plastic blade. They are easily damaged and the technique is to apply only sufficient heat to soften the bond and only prise after the adhesive has softened. They release gradually - it takes time and care.
Clean the tape residue and use a new length of 3M or equivalent to re-attach.

Thanks for the input everyone. I was hoping for an easy swap to avoid having to repaint a new part and pestering the dealer for another damaged--piece even though they did it. The small scratch/dent wouldn't bother me if it weren't on the driver's side, but I see it every time I open the door.
I'll take a poll on whether I'm being too picky by trying to attach a pic.

I installed some offcuts form my PPF wrap; Expel ultimate on the plastic part where you swing your shoes in throught the door aperture - total overkill, but not a single scuff mark.

Yep, that's me, Mr. **** OC. Point of fact is after one year there was not a mark on it until my dealership worked its magic. That's not all the havoc they wreaked, but I've not composed that story just yet.

Yes that tape sure does grip. I didn't like the scratches on the original sill plates when I got my new-to-me ride. I also thought the brushed finish was a little coarse and cheap looking so tracked down a pair of the Union Jack version which are much nicer. I didn't worry too much about keeping the originals for replacement but even with a hot air gun and some trim removal tools, carnage was inevitable. A little blood sacrifice was also required but I think the end result was worth it.
