Drove over a mountain of a road bump going about 60MPH - need advice
Hi all!
have been loving my 2017 F-Type R since joining this sub last year!!
I was driving on a city road today and I was going about 60MPH then out of nowhere there was the most enormous change in pavement level I have ever seen. I couldn’t react quickly enough and hit it head on. It was terrible… wheels felt like they came off the ground, it sounded like I ran into a concrete pillar, etc..
after arriving at my destination I went to inspect the damage and shockingly my wheels look perfectly fine, tires still have all their pressure in them, totally good there. Now I crawl as far under the car as I can and it looks like the front left control arm scrapped the concrete and on the back half of the car there is some sort of rear cross brace that looks attached to the frame that got ripped off.
The biggest concern is that I busted any of my suspension components, but it drove perfectly fine on my way home. there are no vibrations, the wheel wasn’t pulling one way or the other, everything felt totally normal. I was planning on taking into my local independent mechanic to have them look at it, but wanted to get the thoughts from the forum. Anyone had this happen before? Anything else I Should be looking for?
Thanks for any help and hope my baby didn’t get hurt too bad
What happened is ENORMOUSLY subjective in terms of exactly what happened. Yes, take it to a shop, preferably one that can check alignment, and look over things for cracks.
Reading the title, I was picturing a "speed hump" like authorities sometimes place on neighborhood thru-streets. But the rest of the description sounds like the thinly asphalted cattle trails that Fort Worth has the audacity to give street names and addresses to.
Lol thanks for the defense guys!! And FWIW I wasn’t driving 60 in a literal downtown city street. Actually as someone mentioned above it DID happen in Fort Worth and it was in a 55MPH zone, so nothing reckless.
I went back to the spot it happened and took a video and am going to submit a claim with the city, cause after seeing it again it is a legit hazard.
I did drive it yesterday afternoon a short distance to test it out and everything felt perfectly normal. No vibrations or pulling one way or the other at all. But my one question is would anyone happen to know what that cross brace that broke in the second picture is meant for?
Those braces add strength and stiffness of the chassis. I would strongly not recommend driving the car with a broken brace. If you were to hit another similar road hazard without the brace it could distort the structure.
Right now it looks like you need the brace and should probably get the control arm replaced. If you're planning on making an insurance claim I'd recommend the dealer over an independent. They could send the car to a qualified body shop to make sure the geometry is good. When I needed one, there were only two somewhat nearby with that certification and five in the greater Bay Area. There are more now, but that kind of qualification will help with the insurance company.

I second getting the wheels checked for distortion and would suggest not telling the insurance company just how fast you were going!!
KenFtype is enjoying a seven-day ban from the forums to see if he can cool down and return with a restored ability to treat other members courteously and respectfully.
Apologies to the other members whose posts I deleted, but I didn't want any quotations of KenFtype's unnecessarily critical and disrespectful posts to remain.
To those who have additional constructive advice to offer Shagman82, carry on.
Yer unbelievable. I call BS on you not checking this thread. That's funny. Your personality will not allow for it. That is very apparent. The fact that you have the nerve to come back here in this thread and talk like this after getting banned says everything we need to know.
You definitely did not accept your banning, this is for sure, but it is good news to hear that you will not comment here further. It is not helpful nor productive.

ahh thank you so much, this is very helpful!! I’m so stupid, I didn’t even realize an insurance claim was an option and after checking I, do in fact, have pothole (collision) coverage! Quick question on that: If I move forward with an insurance claim, will I have a dirty / minor accident reported on my car title?
I will definitely go Jaguar cert if I do move forward with a claim, but was thinking that I should have the really good independent mechanic that lives right beside me check it out to just see if we can get a ballpark of what we are looking at. Sad part is their first opening is April 27th
one last quick question for ya: do you mind me asking what happened with your car and was the body shop process smooth for you?
I read only enough of your latest manifesto to discern that:
1. You expect us all to believe that you have never driven 5 mph over any posted speed limit, and are, therefore, in a unique position to judge and condemn any member who admits to such a "crime;" and,

First question: It depends. My car shows nothing on CarFax. The body shop reported nothing, I expect because they consider it restoration, but don't really know. It might be that they're high-end and their Aston Martin and Bentley customers wouldn't want that. It might also be that the other insurance company accepted 100% responsibility. My own insurer might have reported it, but that's also an unknown.
Anyway, The process was smooth. although it did take a long time (4.5 months). I'd only had the car nine months, so there may have been parts availability issues. I got rear-ended on the freeway when traffic came to a stop and the car behind me did not. The I've seen lots of bodywork over the years and I honestly can't tell which panels are factory finish and which were repainted.
