Default Engine noises question

I had my car since February, and now have a good feel for what is normal. Couple things that are normal I am somewhat concerned about.

Q1: First start of the day and I hear lots of valve chatter - typical sewing machine noise. The noise does not go away right away, easily 60s or longer after the start. It does go away as soon as I start driving.

This seems like a dry start issue to me. Do I have leaking oil retaining canister or hydraulic lifter? I want to get to the bottom of this before it eats cams.

Q2: Supercharger noise. It is always there, engine cold or hot. Reminds me of faint cicadas, just at the edge of hearing. Is this normal? This is my first supercharged car, but I always thought that unlike turbos, superchargers are quiet unless near red line.

Thanks!

Can't help you on number 1...but I have the same noise as well. I've had it on my first F-Type and on my current one.

Number 2- Some supercharger chatter is normal. I wish I had more supercharger whine noise though!

Keep in mind some chatter can also be coming from the fuel injectors as well.

My 2015 R does not have any chatter on start up ... and the super charger noise is normal. I have the engine cover off on mine (heat soak) and the super charger noise is slightly more pronounced.

The oil is 0/20 which seems very thin to me, regardless mine does not have the start up noise, although now that you have raised the issue, I will pay more attention and advise if I hear any... if it was anything above a very light noise, I would have noticed.

I do not hear the supercharger noise, though it was quite pronounced on my Corvette. I think the F-Type has better sound insulation in the cabin, the exhaust is louder(my choice).

On the first morning cold start, mine barks like no other start during the day. No clatter, no blower whine (unfortunately).

Your engine is of DOHC configuration so there are no lifters, hydraulic or otherwise, that depend upon pressurized oil. Residual oil is more than enough for initial start up so most likely the noise you are hearing is unrelated to valve chatter.

I don't have my car now and my hearing is pretty severely damaged anyway, so I can't comment on any of these noises. I will note though that DOHC does not necessarily preclude hydraulic lifters. The Saab B202 engine had them and I think it came to the US in 1984, certainly by 1985.

I'm glad I found this thread. I have the V6 supercharged...only on a 2017 XE R Sport. The OP described the chatter noise he was hearing as a "cicada" like chirping. That's a great description of what I've been hearing during spirited acceleration. Is this normal?...and is it supercharger related or fuel injector related?
Lastly.. is this noise just a fact of life or can it be elimated?
Thank you for any help

When pushed, some supercharger noise is normal. F-type has padded engine cover that deadens it quite a bit. With this cover removed, it is noticeable when you push the car. That is normal. However, it shouldn't be noisy at idle.

Thank you. It's faint, and only when I'm pushing, mostly from 4K RPM and upward...that slight chirping cicada sound. I don't hear it at idle...although I do hear varying degrees of fuel injector noise on cold start up.
Thanks again

I get the cicada noise on cold mornings after moisture has condensed on a bunch of surfaces. Take bout 7 miles of driving for the noise to go away. Working with my performance shop, we narrowed it down to the SC belt. Changing to a lighter more flexible belt eliminates the problem, but not recommended for durability (and the extra 7 lbs of boost I'm running).

My new SVR makes all of the "strange" noises that the my 2016 R made before it and it consumes just as much oil....
