Default Exhaust pops causing CEL for O2 sensor

I've noticed something quirky with my 2016 R...you know when you rev the car above 3.5-4k range and you tap on the gas, it gives a ridiculous amount of pops and burps? It seems that if I do it too much over a period of time, it always triggers the O2 sensor CEL. I've already visited the dealership and applied all software updates, but this annoying thing still happens. If I drive normally and don't go rev/pop happy, the CEL doesn't come back. At this point I just manually clear the code via OBD it and be back on my way, but does anyone else have similar encounters? Should I perhaps consider a O2 spacer? I'm thinking it's one of those JLR O2 CEL issues that never seem to go away no matter what updates are applied.

Could it be a sensor close to tolerance limit?

This is normal and unavoidable. Those sensors are pretty fragile, and I think most '16 owners (me included) have had at least 1 replaced. When it pops, the EFT's get higher, and that usually wrecks the sensors. They are cheap though and covered under warranty (until they aren't). Quick to replace as well.

Cheers!

I can't even SEE them! Is there a tutorial or YouTube Video on the process?

The rear most sensors after the cats (sensor 3 I think) are very easy to access - see post #7 in this tread:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/f...cation-200433/

From my experience its usually not access to the sensors that's the problem during replacement its the sensor connectors. Fortunately the rear sensors of the F-Type are relatively easy to get at.

The internals of the sensors are a ceramic element. Some have an integral heater.

The over run (pops and crackles) are un burned fuel igniting and creating shock waves in the exhaust system. Ceramic things are brittle. Brittle things usually don't handle shock waves well.

Massive fireworks coming out of my tailpipes with a pulley/tune on my V6 for the past 35k miles and no CELs or O2 sensor failures. May be an issue limited to the V8s.

Same here for the past 2+ years, but only some 16k miles.

I'll see if I can get the dealership to replace it during my next maintenance visit in a few weeks, since this won't be the first time I went there with the same problem. Any chance that an aftermarket O2 sensor may fare better? If this keeps happening, I might either look into an aftermarket O2 sensor, or put a spacer on them.

I have a stock tune on a V6S and fried the #3 sensor yesterday during a little sprint between red lights. My first CEL at 12K miles (purchased it at 10K miles).

The VAP tune may be gentler on the O2 sensors than the OEM tune.

Yet another reason to get the VAP tune when my warranty expires.

Well...I still have at least a year of warranty left, so that's not an option yet. I'll check out some O2 spacers and see how that goes, since that's the cheapest and fastest option at the moment.

My V8 isn't tuned, it has 49000 miles on it, no CEL or sensor replacement
It's certainly a mystery how some owners have this problem whilst others don't

Typically tunes are safely and gently "leaning out" the tune, which in turn creates higher exhaust gas temperatures. It isn't the shockwaves that I think are nuking the o2 sensors, it's the heat. The tune will likely make them foul slightly faster, but I really wouldn't worry too much about it. If you are concerned about them, you can have the mechanic at the *********** show you where they are and how to swap them out. I did a quick search for cost on the part and I am seeing some disturbing numbers out there..... Should be like $25 per sensor as they really don't do a whole lot, but I am seeing crazy numbers like $300+.... This sounds like complete BS! Can one of the forum masters take a look and see what these puppies are worth aftermarket?

Update: the O2 spacers seems to do its job. the CEL went from certainty to rarely, even after multiple rips of pops and bangs. It still does come back if I do it like my life depended on it, but I don't plan on ripping it any more than occasionally, which will fit this just fine.

Great news for all, thanks for posting. You might try a 90 degree angle spacer for more isolation. Lots on ebay, or easy to add an elbow.
