Failed eDiff symptoms?
2014 V8S owned since new - 27k miles.
Car has started to exhibit strange symptoms for past few months. Can hear a very slight whine that wasn’t there before - almost supercharger like coming from somewhere, can’t pinpoint where exactly it’s so faint.
More noticible is a feeling of drag being induced when driving and when turning left or right into side streets, or if in a slow tight radius circle applying the throttle induces a jolt as if something had locked up and has been freed. Each press of the throttle causes this jolt. My JLR dealer checked it out and said it’s fine although I get the feeling they didn’t check too well. I also had them carry out a full alignment.
Could this be symptoms of of a failed / failing eDiff?

It was noticeable with the radio off and the exhaust closed, you could tell it was either the diff or something with the trans or rear drive train. the clunking was like a had a big rock stuck in the tire, only heard it when you went around a corner, thump, thump, thump.

Just wanted to close the loop on this - in case anyone experiences anything similar in the future.
Took it back into JLR a second time for them to look at it. They stated the software versions were very out of date on the car and there were much newer versions especially one for the ediff that they wanted to try first. They updated the ABS, PCM, body gateway CHCM and rear differential modules according to the worksheet. It has resolved the problem, the car drives great now. No idea why that would be as software doesn't "go bad". Maybe the full system reload / reboot cleared out any gremlins.
Which got me to thinking. I obviously had first generation software versions from 2014 and much newer improved versions were subsequently released. All owners should have access to these updates not just when the dealership determines you need them if a problem arises.
I recently picked up a Tesla Model X to replace my Range Rover and it really is a breath of fresh air to get regular over the air software updates. All owners benefit from improvements at the same time, really fantastic. As cars are increasingly becoming software defined and reliant on computer code to run properly the sooner other manufacturers embrace this model the better.
And just to finish off, JLR Darien in CT were absolutely fantastic. My warranty expired in January 2018 but they did the software updates for me at no charge. Something they obviously did not need to do.
