Default First Maintenance

Greetings! New owner with a few questions. If they have already been addressed, please pardon my duplication.

I have read the owner's manual and it does not really answer the questions I have. Took the car into the dealership when the code 'service in 600 miles' came on and they cleared it and said, "See you at 16,000!" I know I am really old school, but I would never wait 16,000 miles to service my car.

When is the first service usually performed on a new car and what all needs to be done? And about how many thousands $$$$ should I save up?

They want you to come in every year near the delivery anniversary or 16k miles, whichever comes first. Those services are free for the first year on the '14-'15 models and for the entirety of the warranty period on the subsequent model. Yes, 16k seems far too long for the first oil change which will cost about $110 to do it yourself, or about $150 for the dealer to do it. Others can chime in regarding what they charge for an annual service

Just had mine done 4 days ago. $156 out the door. Yes, they want you to come in every year to change the oil and then determine if any of the other services need to be performed. I have other vehicles so it will take a couple of years to reach 15k thus they will only do whats required

Thank you for the replies
So...............................
1 - Jag will pay for the annual maintenance only?
2 - I can have the car serviced at any time I want, if I pay for it?
3 - If I pay to service it, does it void the warranty with Jag, even if I use a Jag dealer?
4 - If I pay to service it, does it void the warranty with Jag, if I use an Indy and they do not have access to Jag's special dyed oil?
5 - If I do any mods to the car, does it void the warranty?

I have a '15 so might be different for you...

1. If you have a '16 and above yes, but your car is also under warranty so not sure why else you'd bring it in. It's either coming in for annual service or because something is happening that you're not happy with - warranty service.

2. Yes but my understanding is they want the oil changes done every year or at the scheduled mileage whichever comes first (double check this), so again you're not paying (I'm assuming you have a '16 or newer.

3. Hmmmm, not sure how that would happen. Are you going to change the oil, etc. 2 or 3 times a year? I guess if you're going to track the car a lot you'd want to accelerate the servicing but I don't see how that would void the warranty.

4. Anyone can perform the services. You can do it yourself. You should document the work and (obviously) make sure it's done right. There's a law about this. Regarding the oil...I didn't realize it was special. My car has a window sticker on it now that shows - Mobil full syn 0W20 and a scheduled change in 10k miles. So now I'm going to call them and ask about this magic oil.

5. That gets sticky and depends on the mod. They could deny claims on the system that you modify and possibly others if they can prove that mod affected
other systems.

I would get friendly with your local dealership and talk with them about these things. Mine has been nothing short of great and would talk with them about all of this.

New and first-time Jag owner here. Yeah, there is a special oil - at least Jag seems to want you to think so. I just bought a '15 F-Type S with 14,400 on the odo. Purchased from a BMW dealership about 10 days ago and I was told that they changed the oil while the car was going through its' inspections (also got a new set of rear tires). However, I have not been able to get any information regarding the type of oil they used. It is my understanding that Jag has a flavor of Castrol oil that is only available to Jag dealers, and as it is that oil that they want used in the F-Type, I am contemplating taking my car to my local dealer and having them change the oil just to be certain the correct stuff is in it in spite of the existing oil being virtually unused.

Occasionally you can find the JLR spec'd oil on eBay or Amazon, but you can usually get it from the dealer at the same price (~ $10/Qt or Liter). The OEM filter will run another $28 on eBay. You can do the oil change yourself or spend another $40 to let the dealer do it.
Oil spec: ST JLR.51.5122, 0w-20 Castrol Edge Professional
Filter: C2D3670

From what little time I have had to research the car, it seems as though Jaguar adds a colorant to the oil. This is to help them track leaks and will also let them know if other hands have been on it (thus voiding the warranty?). It also has a gold filter - am hoping that does not need replacing!

Will be taking the car in for service after the break in time is up. I am not too keen on waiting for 16,000 miles to find out if my engine has shavings in it or not...............

Have sent in the Blackstone Lab Report................will see what it says. I guess that since there is no drain hole, the oil must be sucked out!

There is a normal drain hole (sump plug), it's just hidden under the plastic under-tray which you have to remove to access the plug.
Which I am about to do in half an hour's time (oil change time)!

Quite normal for the F-Type, low Molybdenum and high Titanium coz the special Unobtainium Castrol brew that JLR recommend has a lot of titanium added but very little molybdenum (which is a common additive).

So just to confirm as I am also new to Jaguar, the initial oil change is either 12 months or 16km? I use to change the oil in my Porsche every 5-6km?

Correct.
But many owners do an extra oil change half way as well, ie at 6 months or 8,000 miles, to "play safe" and for peace of mind, considering how sensitive these engines are to oil quality and level. No need to change the filter for this extra oil change.
A few also do a "break in" first oil change (and filter change) at around 2,000 - 4,000 miles.
Some see it as cheap insurance, others see it as a waste of time and money with no need to divert from the manufacturer's recommended schedule, YMMV.

Thanks, My plan was to do a change early, however Porsche advises not to as they use a "break in" oil and want it in there for the first year or 12km. wasn't sure if Jag was similar. Think i will follow my head and do it early, I like cheap insurance.

It's actually 12 months or 16k miles, not km, for what it's worth.

Tayls77 is from London (England) so I took his text of "12 months or 16km" to mean 16 thousand (ie k) miles (m) rather than 16 (thousand) kilometres. But yes, I first thought he may have mixed up miles & kilometres, it pays to be more precise with these types of measurements, your car/engine may depend on getting it right!
