Default First scratch

Well, it was bound to happen. First mark on the car. Went to my father-in-law's house to take him for a drive and his large German Shepherd came out to greet me and jumped up on the driver's side door. Scratched the clear coat a little....that's not a big deal; rubbed it out with a little rubbing compound. But he also etched the glass with his nails. I've used my power buffer and glass polish, but no joy. Most people wouldn't notice, but I know it's there.

I think the only way to get rid of an scratch in the glass is to replace the window. Hate to know what that costs!

Well, scratches are inevitable. May as well suck it up and enjoy the ride. Thanks for letting me vent.

Contact Safelite. They have some pretty sophisticated technologies for reconditioning glass. They might have a solution for you.

being in SC, glass repairs should also be covered under your insurance at no cost to you

Vent away and you have absolutely the right attitude. While no one would jump for joy getting a scratch - or, shudder the thought, worse - it is only a car and cars are meant to be driven. Drive a car and, inevitably, s%^* happens.

Happy New Year. (And don't blame the dog; blame your father-in-the-law ....and have him pay to repair it).

My first scratches were also (my kid's) German Shepherd induced. Careful with them around your Jag.

You should know that dogs and cats don't get along. Fortunately, my beagle is scared to death of that growling monster.

Seriously, sorry for your loss. Unhingd's Safelite suggestion is a good one.

I just ordered a dark blue off ebay.. Needless to say my 129K+ beauty has a few scratches .. It has a lipstick wax filler thing.. I'll let you know how it works is a few days.. It seems to have good reviews..

I used my buffer to smooth out the scratches on the clear coat, then applied some Victoria wax with my bare hand; looks perfect!
The glass is 50% better: I used some toothpaste with the buffer on low speed. Seems to have lessened the appearance of the scratch on the glass. Then I drove it; forgot all about everything as I zipped around a Cayman, letting him enjoy the sound of my exhaust note. ;>)) What a car! I'm well chuffed....
