Default To grind or not to grind

I'm not convinced about the Jag studs being different lengths, I think it is down to the 'pocket' size on the particular style wheel.
The blades I have measured at over an inch, maybe we could see someone with another style wheel measure the pocket depth as a comparison?

I didn't check the pocket depths, but the tech who installed the spacers measured the studs on the wheel hub to make sure he wasn't going to have a problem and the lengths are in fact inconsistent. It may be a combination of the two things though, where the space available inside the wheel makes the stud length irregularities irrelevant. I find it a little hard to believe that the same wheels (Tornados) would be inconsistent as opposed to the studs, which would seems a cheaper and less "critical" (from the standpoint of slight irregularities) piece of the car.

Default Guys, we are overthinking this whole thing

It's a one time trim that takes minutes if need be.

Regardless of what the cause is and whether you need to or not, the point is this...

Test fit your wheels and if you don't get a clean seat, do the two minute trim.

We'll put in more energy trying to diagnose the "why's" when the focus should be the "If and How's".

It's such a simple fix that if it needs doing, the tool required is a $29 angle grinder @ Home Depot. If you don't already have one in your toolbox, it'll be worth every penny moving forward.

Agreed. I was simply pointing out that the above poster who suggested that Tornado wheels may all be problematic, isn't correct. It's more 'luck of the draw" as it seems.

It may be the end of the stud that has no thread on it which appears to be "peened' slightly. The threaded portion I'm positive would need to be consistent as each car can be specced from new with a whole host of wheels and they all need to fit of course.

The pocket are milled out on a CNC machine once the wheels have been cast, so I would imagine they would be within a few thou of each other.

I had my wheels off again for a final torque, and measured all the JLR studs and Lenny's and they are all the same....maybe you are right...it's luck of the draw!

While the studs may or may not be uniform (it really doesn't matter) the different wheel designs have different pocket depths depending on model. Cyclones are too shallow so grinding all studs will be required. The other wheel types vary.

Does a wheel alignment need to be done after the spacers? My car seems to need one now after the spacers were installed.

just mounted Lenny's adapters on. Very happy with the result. I do however agree that it would need to be combined with a set of lowering springs for a perfect stance. Will ponder my options..

Go with the Velocity AP springs if you have a steep driveway approach. Otherwise the H&Rs offer the most aggressive looking stance. ( and handle really well. )

thank you Unhingd. Not steep driveway entrance but I think I nevertheless prefer the mild drop of the Velocity springs. I just need to make sure they come with the necessary certification papers in order for them to be properly registered on this car in Switzerland. They can be pretty tedious with such mods over here. I will contact V. AP

Has any of you used these on a car with carbon ceramics? I ask because the face of the rear aluminum hats are not flat, only the portion where the wheel backpad sits is. So if the diameter of the spacer is exactly that of the wheel backpad then it should be fine.
Can someone that has installed them take a close up pic of the spacer through the spokes of the wheels once mounted.
Thanks

So I am worried that the 17MM adapters and then adding 305's in the back will be too wide and sticking out. I personally need to error on the side of not enough width. Won't the wider tire stick out another 5mm (5mm on outside, 5mm on inside). I am considering going with 15mm in front and 10mm in back therfore the end result would be 15mm in front and 20mm in back. Am I being too crazy? I am an orthodontist and 5mm is HUGE in my business.

Many know much more than me but I'd say you'd be ok as long as there's not a drop involved. I've instlled my 17mm and there's room for bigger tires using the eyeball test.

+1. Not much room left over with the 15mm adaptor/305 tire/1.3" H&R spring combination, but without a lowering you can easily fit a 305 tire and 17mm spacer.
