Had dealer install new cap under warranty since tether snapped. Picked car up this AM drove home @ 25 miles. Now, tonight the check engine light came on. New cap is solid black, no writing, no reference to cap clicking . 2017 base Premium M/T. Retightened cap, no change. Is this the correct cap?

I would have dealer check too. Sounds like you may have the (DTC) P0442 - “Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (Small Leak)” from the cap not sealing properly. Easy to check if you have a code reader. If, so, I would clear the code and re-install the cap to ensure it is seated tightly and see if the CEL comes back.

Don't have an OBD, but I'm thinking it's the cap. Owners manual says cap should click and this one doesn't. Dealership wasn't finished with the work order, so I don't know what part number they used. I do know that parts get put back in wrong bags/boxes and are then re-shelved/re-sold. I tried pressing the cap in and rotating to get it to click, but not successful. My Golf had the same issue, and correct cap ordered by VIN, took care of the problem.

Hi and thank you... I was thinking about that, but the car was there for so long (Dec. 2021) long story :-) LOL... it was one of the first things they did. I didn't discover this til 7pm day of retrieval Friday 5/6.. short answer, wish I did, but don't. I read through manual and it says cap is supposed to click. think I found correct one, even says on it turn til it clicks.

There are two types of caps, vented and non vented. your dealer may have fitted the wrong one. Have a look at this listing and see if it matches yours https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/175191494027

Paul, thank you for the link, ordered this one T2H46581, even says it needs to click.

Will report later this week when it gets here. Otherwise, I'm fighting with a heat shield on my E. :-)

Valerie:
I am very curious to see if your new gas cap is the right one and takes care of your problem. I went to check my 17 F-type R gas cap to see if it had any numbers on it to help you. This is the cap I found on my car. https://www.ebay.com/itm/164927296405 It is a NON Vented cap, and the description will tell me it doesn't fit my car. SO is your new cap vented or not. I couldn't find any pictures or description that showed or mentioned it being vented or not. BTW I am n NOT getting any CEL lights or codes. The cap was on the car when I purchased it from the dealer this past November in California. Thanks

Hmmm, it does look like what was put on the car. I'm embarrassed to say I don't remember what the cap that was on the car when I bought it looked like :-(
I first read up on the gas fill page in the owners manual. It specifically says that the cap needs to turn until one click is heard. I went back out and took the current cap off and then put it back on, tried to turn it to make it click. It acted like it wanted to, but wouldn't/didn't. I believe what this manual says, as I checked the cap on the coolant reservoir, the manual said 3 clicks and I made sure I did that after taking that cap off and putting it back on.
Even though I notified the dealer right away of the issue, I went ahead and ordered a new cap. That new one has "turn to one click" printed on it. Didn't want to have to deal with supply issues on the dealer side. They have contacted me however, and want me to bring the car in for a 'full diagnostic', and they said they ordered a new cap which should be in within a couple of days. With all the engine work that was done, they want to rule out any other possible cause of the CEL.
I only have the 6 cylinder, so not sure if that makes a difference in the cap application. Is there a way to tell if this cap is vented? There's usually a little hole or something? I will go look at it and send you a photo of what I have.
Thank you so much for your help, will keep you posted!

Here are two photos, one of the outside, one inside... could be a vented cap due to the slots around the inside perimeter, and a photo clip from the Ebay auction. The place I ordered from on Ebay is Rancho Mirage Jaguar in CA. The auction site had a "check if this part fits your car" area and it did come up that the cap fit my car MY2017 base Premium MT. Note the white printing on the Ebay cap.. "tighten until cap clicks or engine light may come on". It tries to click, but not the substantial clicks that I get from the coolant cap, and definitely not what George05 gets from his cap.
Haven't taken the car out since last weekend, so maybe I will just go do that now. Twist my arm.
OK, so checked Paul's link again... the recent cap is, according to those photos, non vented.

Well the cap I have is NON Vented, and apparently works. ( No holes in the bottom plastic what so ever ) What had me going was the fact it is listed as a Land Rover Replacement, but states it is NOT compatible with a 2017 Jaguar F type R (my car!) ( Even though I think it is! ) Just curious to see what you end up with. Thanks

The replacement cap the dealer ordered was in when I brought the car back at their request. They want to run "full diagnostics" on the car to assess the cause of the CEL and I agreed. The new cap looks like the one replaced. Then the cap I ordered came today and it doesn't look like the auction photo, no wording about the click, and it doesn't click when you hold the base and turn the cap. I'm hoping to know more, maybe Friday, more likely next week. Service writer and tech are taking this seriously, and kept apologizing for having the CEL go on after returning the car to me. Possibility is old gas, they had the car for 5 months (over the winter and I would have stored it anyway). Hoping OBD will help. I only run 91 no ethanol, so there won't be any corn cobs in the tank

Hi Valerie, have you heard from your dealer on the CEL, did they do a diagnostic test and have they diagnosed the issue? 5 months at the dealer was that for gas cap replacement and SC oil change. Was it supply chain issues or were they waiting for approval on warranty work. I hope you have your jag back and enjoying the drive. Love these F types!
