Default Socket Size for Removing the Steering Wheel?

Hi guys,

I've seen the official instructions for removing a steering wheel on the F-type and done it on some BMW's in the past. But before I start the job, I can only see reference to a special Jaguar tool for the job, but what's the bolt head size? BMW's were normally 16mm, but Jag looks bigger and wondering if it's a weird size.

Graeme

You don't need a special tool to undo the main steering wheel bolt, it's just a standard hex headed bolt.
Which means one of a normal set of hex sockets has gotta fit, my guess is 16, 17, 18 or 19 mm. My money is on 17 mm.
There is a diagram of the steering wheel components in the Workshop Manual showing the bolt but it doesn't say anywhere what size it is.

That's great, thanks for confirming. Will give it a go in the next few days, hopefully I can pop the airbag out ok. I also need to investigate if my 2014 V6S has one or two batteries to disconnect.

If it's a 2014 it will have two batteries, but you only need to disconnect the main battery not the secondary battery.
And one more tip - don't disconnect the battery until you have unclipped (but not removed) the steering wheel air bag, as you need to turn the wheel 90 degrees one way first then back 180 degrees the other way to do the unclipping. This unclipping is what the "special tool" is for but apparently (I have never done it) you can do so with a small flat blade screwdriver.

Thanks again. I'm hoping a small screwdriver will do the job.

If you think of it, please take some pictures of the air bag removal

Started the job, air bag removed fairly easy, but a little unsure how to remove these connectors and they look fragile. On the older Jags the orange tabs seem to slide back, then pull the connector off upwards pressing in the side tabs, but these are different.

Jaguar manual says "Release the locking tang and disconnect the electrical connector"

For info, the bolt size appears to be either 21mm or 13/16".

New steering wheel on, horn, paddles and cruise\limiter controls working, but audio button aren't

Not sure if i need to transfer my old one over, but they're an older design and worn and my cruise doesn't work on the old wheel very well, so would have mismatched buttons.

Looks good. The old steering wheel had the black trim, and the new one has the silver trim, correct? That's what I want to do is get the silver trim, which is why I wanted the pictures how to take off the airbag. Did you take any pictures of that part of the process?

Morning,

Yeah that's right. I didn't get pictures, but this video shows you everything you need -

Also, as per the advice above - "And one more tip - don't disconnect the battery until you have unclipped (but not removed) the steering wheel air bag, as you need to turn the wheel 90 degrees one way first then back 180 degrees the other way to do the unclipping. "
