Question Hood struts

My hood struts are failing only hold at about 25% up. Strange since they haven't been used very many times. Any ideas as to check anything short of replacing? "14 vert. They seem fairly straight forward to replace, DYI. Any advice on how to replace myself? Any reasonable place to buy?

It is most likely that only one of those cylinders has gone bad. Remove both and manually compress each to check for resistance. The bad one will offer little.

The cylinders are easily removed from their attachment points by sliding a screwdriver into the slots under the metal clips at those points and lifting.
