How Can The Body Be So Beautiful And The Engine So Ugly

You have to want it to be pretty.
We can still build pretty engines it just costs more. Most supercars have wonderful looking engines. Back when Steve Jobs was alive he wanted his engineers to build a pretty motherboard, they showed him the result and it was horrid so he gave up (they showed him!). But I build my own PCs and those that make motherboards for us do make a good looking motherboard. I think the same thing applies with engines, there are engineers that want functional and don't care for beauty and there are those of us that think performance can and should be good looking.
This is my latest build, excuse the wiring in the back.
This is a 1968 V8 I'm putting in my project car, it was far easier to make look good than the LS I would have rather had.
This is the engine in the car, we still had to do wiring clean up and touch up paint on the frame.

I am not that young anymore and I remember when an engine looked like an engine (and when it was easy to spot what all the different parts were and their functions). However I do like that technology has wastly improved and the performance has been greatly improved. It might not look as nice as it once did, but the increased performance is well worth it in my eyes.
I love the sound and performance of my V8 R, and could not care less of what it looks like. But that's just me....

I had one of those too, although I sold it not long after I got my F-Type. It's rare to see the Audi badge intact; they all seem to fall off at some point.
Sadly there will never be anything like it again. I don't miss having the entire engine ahead of the front axle though.
