Infotainment...

I don't use the system often, but I have tried it. If I recall correctly, once zoomed in or out, it only stays on your selection for a short time, before it reverts back to the preprogrammed range setting. I like to zoom out to see where traffic tie-ups may be happening 10-20 miles out, but it's of limited utility for that.

Maybe I'm not expecting much, but I'm with the OP. There's nothing glaringly evil about the system. But then again I haven't had much time with the iDrive/MMI/COMAND/ systems critics seem to use as the benchmark in this class.
The only real criticism I would level is that the graphics for everything looks dated compared to the polish of even Ford's Sync/MyTouch, the LCD instruments on various makes (the Lexus F-sport and Mercedes S-class in particular - don't XJs have this?), and Audi's Google-powered 3-D mapping.
But most of the time I'm just cruising around with no real place to go so I'm just glad the BT audio streaming is solid and that I can turn off the dang screen by hitting a single button on the dash twice.

My system is the new one (MY 2016, 380W Meridian) and I can compare to BMW iDrive only (long-term user).
The infotainment in Jaguar is much more intuitive and easier to use compared to BMW, which has multiple features, icons, sub menus, sub options, side screens etc. I'm still getting lost there. BMW on flip side is faster and more responsive (short story). The navigation quality and traffic information in Jaguar is below average - as mentioned, it is being beaten by mobile phone apps quite easily.

That's the 'browse' mode. Lets you pan and zoom to see somewhere other than where you are.
I'm talking about changing the map range - 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2 miles, etc.

That's what I'm talking about as well. Does it actually stay on the selected range? Like I said, I don't use car nav often and could be confusing the F-Type with one of our other cars, but when I'm cruising I like it set to 10 miles so I can see traffic tie-ups ahead. I seem to recall when set out to longer ranges it reverts back to close-up maps.
