Default Internet connected cars

What does your car know about you? The Washington Post wrote a very accessible article on cars and data collection. Make sure you realize that both your phone and your connected car collect this data, and this information can be used against you by law enforcement and even in civil lawsuits.

Who was it here that posted "I put black tape over my rearview camera so that nobody knows where I've been"?

Priceless.

(When I had a company-provided Blackberry phone, I always turned off the GPS...)

Keep in mind, unmodified Android doesn't have such capability. When you "turn GPS off", you only set a flag to ignore it. GPS data is still collected and can be accessed on OS-level. So Cellebrite would still be able to extract location data from your phone. The only way to avoid GPS tracking is to psychically remove the battery or put your cellphone into a shielded container.

Faraday bag?

I cover my head with one...the old spaghetti colander was getting too uncomfortable.

(Just kidding, If I was that paranoid I wouldn't have purchased a convertible!)

I just ordered a backup camera. Glad I saw this and still have time to cancel the order.

Good article. Thanks for linking it.

Along those lines, I wonder wear the traffic indicator in the top row of my 2014s navigation system gets its info.

I am going to start carrying one of these in case law enforcement or insurance asks for my phone.

A good operational security practice is to keep plain old landline connected to the answering machine and give anyone that asks that number. Because the tech is so old, it takes paper forms and actual tech in the field to tap it, transfer it away and so on. Keep your cellphone number on a need-to-know basis and don't readily give it out as it is trivially easy to steal and misuse as a proof of identity.

In your case, it is likely FM radio receiver. Sort-of like automated airport weather broadcast (aka weather band) but encoded.

Does this work with the VOIP 'landlines' provided by cable services?

That might work for you, but I don’t know any fortunetellers.

Its the ease of accessibility without a warrant that makes car logs dangerous- depending on your perspective.
My friend was able to show his gold-digging wife had gone to see the divorce attorney long before her alleged complain of his infidelity.
No way could he have got records of privileged attorney-client meetings, and it would have taken an act of congress to get cell phone records.
Interesting thing is she had hired a private eye to watch him- he just used the cars unsecured data logs.

The onstar system in my Corvette C7 is able to show me (and of course GM) the numbers of `hard accelerations` in one month.

Of course, here in the Midwest where there are a lot of toll roads the government could elect to determine how fast and where you were traveling via your I Pass time going through toll booths.

So, what that really says is that you should drive your '57 or '65 corvettes and use side roads the next time you want to commit a capital crime.

Sooo....whether it’s tuned or not, the engine warranty is useless?

Maybe, maybe not.

Not so much an issue with the automatic cars, but if you MT guys downshift and cause the engine to rev past redline, they will 'see' that in the ECU record.

In that case, I’d have no sympathy for the owner.

Good old Money shift.I have all the sympathy for the owner, but warranty would be voided for a good reason.
