Dogbreath! Good thing you were not in the shopping center parking lot when it decided not to work. I have always thought that mercury batteries were good for about three years, but I think a little preventive maintenance is called for here, changing the batteries every two years rather than waiting for a message or a serious inconvenience. As I have said before they are idiosyncratic machines.
