Lease a V6 or V8???
So I am looking for a 40th birthday gift for my wife. I started looking at the base model and then saw all the negative reviews on the 4 cylinder and jumped up to the 340hp V6 model. Ran some numbers and found a decent deal but then I got thrown for a loop with a 17' Type R that two dealers are willing to lease for less then $200/mo more than the 18' 340hp V6. The msrp on both Type R's is $112k and the msrp is $72k on the V6. My question is, is it worth the extra money? Just how nice, cool ,and fast is the Type R over the V6? I am going to test drive both tomorrow and just wanted to get some advice. Sure my wife will not care about the extra horsepower but I'm sure I will enjoy it lol. Thanks for the help!

I probably would take the R over the base if the difference was less than $200 month. I am not sure if the 18 has an active exhaust standard (I think it may) but the V8 does sound better and it will be significantly faster. The V6 will be more nimble from what I hear but I think the V8 will be the better car. It will be interesting to see what you think.
If you do end up leasing the V6 a VAP tune will increase the power significantly.

How many months? Are you considering buying it at the end of the lease or simply turning it back in? Ask your wife which she would rather have. The R won't have the new LED headlights or the newer, larger Navigation screen. My '17 R lease is under $800/month USD on a $112K sticker. I did put $3K down but my $795/month payment includes all taxes for 39 months & 10K miles/year so I am paying a total of $34,005 for the pleasure of driving it the first 32,500 miles and then will make a decision to buy or not. Dealers were offering the '17 v6 340HP models for $650/month with nothing down for the same type of lease so that's $10K less for that same period.

I've only driven the R on track days, but used to have an XKR. That (RWD) could be a menace in the wet and it always felt as though it would be easy to get into trouble driven enthusiastically, especially (say) when coming into traffic or cornering. I loved it for that.
The V6S on the other hand is easy to drive sedately and even when giving it the beans I've never felt remotely as though I could lose control of it. I can get much more out of it, even on wet roads.
My missus does put her foot down from time to time but isnt an enthusiast. If I was choosing for my wife, I'd buy the V6S. If I was choosing for myself, I'd buy a manual V6S or an R.
But as I mentioned, my road experience with the 5.0 SC was in the RWD XKR which has a different suspension setup to the F Type, also much different to steer and the auto isnt as tight.

I do not consider the $200, 35% spread inconsequential. No sense in giving it away.

Surely, you jest. As pointed out elsewhere, in this market segment everything is a la carte, but would it have killed JLR to put in a home link. When I bought mine and questioned the absence of certain things the school answer was "A 911 doesn't have one." God forbid JLR would follow Porsche's everything is optional style.
In all fairness I have an early base model, but since it only gets used a few thousand miles a year, I couldn't see going for a SVR or Project 7 that would just spend its time in the garage. I miss the thingys, but the car is just fine for me. If I needed all the goodies I could have poped for a newer, higher level one.

From a lease perspective can you share the mf, residual, and price you are paying (not the quoted monthly nut price of the car the lease is based off of). To me it looks like the deal is pretty damn good though higher than the 699 per month (.000002 mf, 87k price) LA dealerships were selling in nov/dec.

Its 39 Months. Im in FL and the payment on the R would be $780 mo, 3k down, 5k miles. We really don't need the miles. I wouldn't buy it at the end of the lease. Thats a great deal you got, where are you located? I always hear of the crazy deals in CA. The 18' 340hp would be 589/mo same terms.

There are plenty of other lease comparison threads that provide those other details if that is of interest to you. The $699/mo from that particular Cali dealer was limited to 5K miles/year & required $5K down + taxes, tag, title, etc so by the time you add those other REQUIRED components it was a worse deal than what is being discussed here.

I live in UK so can't comment on financial aspects of these lease deals.
Regarding the choice of V6 S vs V8 R, my advice would be V8 R, although I may be biased.
I was sold on the V8 R by this video review by Chris Harris , especially his comment on "engine choices, well I'm just in this V8 version, there's a lesser powered V6 and everyone says well maybe it's a bit sweeter and lighter, do you know what, I say ***** to that, if you're gonna have an F type coupe get the big one with the massive engine and lay black lines everywhere!"
