Post limited slip differential question

What is the limited slip differential?

and

What is the difference between the mechanical limited slip differential on the V6s and the electronic limited slip differential on the R coupe?

and

if someone wants a V6 not S, Should he consider going for the S just because of the limited slip differential?

Having owned very high performance cars with limited slip differentials, I have the base V6, and I don't miss it, but mine is exclusively for street use. It would make a difference for track use.

The base suspension and drive train are very capable, and there's no horsepower and torque difference between the V6 and V6s engine until 5K RPM.

if you have to ask, you're not going to miss it
for regular street use you won't notice. I don't know much about the V6 models but the biggest thing is probably the active exhaust for the sound, try to get that option.

Actually, you really don't need that either. The V6 without is plenty loud without that option, particularly when in dynamic mode. In fact, it's probably louder than 98% of the cars on the road and performs the same "popping and crackling act" during deceleration.

I would have to respectfully differ with Foosh.
With the V6 there is a big difference in exhaust tone and loudness with the active exhaust on vs off.
The stock exhaust may be loud enough for some, but the active exhaust is heart thumping, head snapping, fist pumpingly louder.
It's definitely overkill and downright immature for some, but it's worth listening to the difference because for others it is sh*t-eating grin awesome!

Oh yes, there's definitely an obvious difference, but I guess I've "outgrown" things like that.

C6 Z06's also had "active exhaust" std, but the valves only opened at 3/4 WOT, and didn't come with a switch. You could buy a switch for less than $50, which plugged in place of the fuse controlling that valve and mounted on the console to manually open and close them at any time, which I and many other owners did. After the initial infatuation for a few months, I found myself leaving it off 98% of the time. However, the V6 without, seems louder than that car with exhaust valves open, if my memory serves me well.

I honestly don't know how JLR gets away with the noise regulations in many countries. I find myself having to be very careful to modulate the noise even without active exhaust as it still draws a considerable amount of attention.

Refering to the difference between V6 and V6S does the Adaptive Dynamics make a difference for road driving ?

Curious to know if you have any idea of the differences, sound wise, between the 'standard' exhaust system and the active exhaust in its open vs closed positions. For example - is the standard the same as the active with the valve(s) closed, or somewhere in between the active closed/open?

MShedden,

I don't know for sure, but my assumption is that it is similar to the active with valves closed. However, there may be other design differences between the std. sport and active exhaust mufflers that I am not aware of.

My V6 seems louder that the V6S I test drove when the valves were shut.

I can see good marketing reasons for this to be so, but isn't neccesarily the case.

The adaptive dynamics will make a difference to the ride, and will allow you to vary other parameters independently. The differences may also be marketing-led however.

FTypical,

That is the perception that I have too, but I can't quantify it. It could well be that the std. sport exhaust which only comes on the base car is a more open design all the time. It is most definitely plenty loud.

I have the base V6 and I think that the lack of an active exhaust simply means that the exhaust is always in the "open" position. I drive in dynamic mode on/sport shift on 98% of the time and the sound is very aggressive. I had the resonator deleted, which adds to the aggressive sound as well.

My S is loud and louder, like that I can make louder without being in dynamic. Great from lite to lite. Our Ghibli is softer in normal and falls in between in Sport mode. Active exhaust have performance reasons but i think entertainment factor is great.
