Question Loud engine 'running' noise

Hi all,

My V6S is pretty loud at idle, and the 'ticking' increases in tempo and volume as you build revs. There's also a bit of a clunk sound on shutdown. I've linked a YouTube video with the idle, various revs, and shutdown.
It's made the loud ticking sounds ever since I bought it, nearly two years ago. It's never been flagged by the main dealer even though I pointed out it's quite loud. I'm now finding it a tad annoying (when not drowned out by exhaust sound, anyway!) so would like to do something about it. Relatedly, since the 'clunk' on shutdown the dealer has advised that I should replace the supercharger 'damper and associated parts'. They quoted a fortune for that so currently thinking:
  • I've found a specialist that will comprehensively re-build the supercharger + improve on some OEM parts, and potentially add a couple of hp in the process via a new upper pulley. All for less than the dealer's quoted damper price.
Any thoughts appreciated on whether (one or both) sounds seem like the supercharger, and if not what it could be?

Cheers,
Matt

That loud tick/rattle I hear does not sound at all like the well-known worn coupler/torsion isolator rattle.
Your rattle is very regular and rhythmical whereas the classic coupler rattle is very irregular, like marbles in a tin can.
The clonk on shut down I hear does sound like the classic worn coupler clonk though.
My WAG is you have both a worn coupler and something else going on.
Maybe it's just that the coupler is now so worn the spring in the middle has gouged a large groove in the SC shaft and that is why the rattle now sounds even and regular.
Either way best to go ahead with getting the SC rebuilt then see if the noise changes or maybe even goes away.
Worst case scenario the rattle is worn crank bearings and it does sound a bit like that to me.
Of course "while your are in there" (with the SC off) you should think about replacing the problematic plastic coolant system pipes/hoses with the new metal versions, plus other parts such as the water/coolant pump and thermostat.

So funny enough my 2018 XF sportbrake is currently in at the dealer for this exact issue. Just like you the car has made a ticking sound for over a year but recently has gotten a lot louder. Mine also has a clunk sometimes at shut down. But my supercharger snout was replaced last year so this clunk though sounding similar must be different.

My noise is accompanied by what sounds like marbles in the front of the engine. I originally could only hear it when the engine was cold but now I can hear it all the time.

Jaguar says my half shaft has failed. Not sure what that is. They ordered a new one and are putting it in tomorrow. I'll update tomorrow with results.

Edit: they replaced a leaking CV boot.... So nothing to do with an engine tick.
