Maserati Alfieri

Maserati Alfieri
New video covering the design and heritage (with some nice vintage maseratis) of the 2016 Alfieri.
I'm thinking of this as a candidate for my next car.
In many ways, the Alfieri pays homage to the F-Type. The product placement, presentation, design lines, price range, and performance-luxury balance are all echoes of the F-Type. It seems clear that Maserati has deep respect for what Jaguar has done with this model and this segment.
Hopefully the coming competition will keep Jaguar motivated to maintain powerful design in its lineup. The Alfieri is a stunning concept and Maserati have promised to keep the production model as similar as possible to the concept, just as Jag did with the F-Type concept.

They're targeting a us$75k entry and a market position below the granturismo. So squarely set against the F-Type. But let's see what actually happens.... Italians are unpredictable!

When I went to the L.A. Auto Show on press day as one of the four forum member guests of Jaguar USA, I posted on the same day that the Alfieri was the best thing I saw at the show, and that it would spell trouble for Aston Martin. It was stunning but seemed a more direct competitor to the XK/XKR as it is bigger and more of a GT than the F-type. I asked the Maserati spokesman who was showing the Alfieri what the price was going to be, and he said, "somewhere between $80,000-180.000. I told him at $80K, he can sign me up, today!"
Gorgeous automobile!

It seems to me that recent Jaguar models have been a paragon of reliability compared to Maserati. The experiences with the Ghibli have not been good, and they're having a hard time giving them away.
The Ghibli also looks far better in pictures than in person, and stickers for nearly six-figures. If they sell the car portrayed in that video for $75K, it will likely only be a caricature of the hand-made prototype.
As for styling, they've not just "borrowed" design features from the F-Type. Those airflow exits below the rear tail-lights are nearly identical to the C7.

And, although this is a running prototype, it will be interesting to see how much of it survives in tact to production. Obviously, the seamless rear quarters and rear end (one piece all the way from the doors wrapped around the car) will not survive as one piece as a replacement in case of an accident would cost tens of thousands of dollars. But even as a suggestion of what's to come, it's stunning.

This is my thought also. It is bigger than the F-Type but just as gorgeous. Looks great but I'd have to drive it before talking about breaking out the check book.

I concur however, gorgeous!

Concepts used to differ markedly from production models but the trend recently has been to really narrow the differences by making more thoughtful concepts which yield high fidelity production models (eg jaguar cx16, BMW i8, etc).
I think manufacturers have realized that it does nobody good to set elated expectations on a concept and then have the production model be a relative letdown. On top of this, machining, materials, structural design and stamping technology has improved to the point where panels can be fit closely and take on radical forms while maintaining high structural integrity, so that gives manufacturers more freedom with cosmetics, so long as basic form satisfies legal requirements worldwide.
Looks to me like Maserati took a page out of the Jaguar playbook with the Alfieri and made efforts to design a concept that can yield a close production model.

Definitely going in F Type direction. They plan convert, and V8 performance model. We have a '14 Ghibli and my wife is already planning on trading, as if the experience of a first year Italian car once is not enough. Actually the ownership of any Italian car! There's a lot of talk about this on the Ghibli forum.
