Miles until empty?

I'm not sure how much I trust that thing..
In mine and a few loaners, I've had a few cases where I'd make a quick stop at an undesirable gas station and put in $5, only to see that the number of miles moves nowhere. The bar gauge will go up (slowly), but the counter will run to zero and stay there for 20+ miles until I reach my preferred gas station. Every other car I've driven will give a live estimate of the number of miles remaining, but it seems Jags don't.

On all three of my Jags there was at least 5 litres (1.3 US gallons) left when the range to empty said "---".
On both my XFs I could and did go another 100 km (62 miles) after the range said ---, but I have not yet tried that on the F-Type and I don't think I will. Apparently it's not a good idea to let the fuel level drop too close to zero as this can damage the fuel pump.

That’s because the “miles till empty” will obviously depend on how you’ll drive. Since the car doesn’t know that, it can only base its prediction on your past driving style, i.e. the average mpg over a given number of miles driven immediately prior to the “miles till empty” calculation. Thus, if you fill it up right after you’ve tracked it, the “miles till empty” will be considerably lower than if you fill it it up after a day of leisurely highway cruising.

I agree with Frenchy
I would expect the miles till empty is calculated, on most cars, by multiplying the fuel level by average fuel consumption. Easy to demonstrate, if it estimates 70 miles left and you drive in a manner similar to how the average fuel consumption was derived you would expect to see 5 miles distance travelled lead to it showing 65 miles left.
If you plant your right foot firmly on the loud pedal then expect the calculated miles left to drop rapidly, 5 miles travelled may lead to it dropping from 70 miles left to 60 miles left.
Conversely if you drive more gently you may drive 5 miles and the estimated distance left may only drop to 68 miles.
It's meant as a guide. You could end up with it showing 0 miles left and be able to drive another twenty miles or run dry when it's showing five miles left.
Personally I wouldn't want to rely totally on what is an indication unless you have spare fuel with you, or feel like walking to the petrol (gas) station.

I agree with about the varied calculation. That's what I want it to do. Mine has been pretty accurate for me. Although most cars calculate to let you go past 0, only a dunce let's it go to 0 (sorry dunces).
I do wonder if it pulls it off one of the trips or if it's a separate call based on the last 100, 200, etc.. miles

I'm fairly sure it's based on the average fuel consumption of your current trip only.
Also, it's extremely conservative so that there is always a goodly amount of fuel left when the range to empty reads 0. Makes sense, otherwise JLR would risk irate owners suing them if/when they ran out of fuel when the range to empty still read a positive amount.
It's a bit like the speedo over-read except reversed.

I find mine to be fairly accurate based on average miles per gallon to that point. I think zero means zero as when I fill up, it seems to calculate the average miles times the remaining amount. The remaining amount is 18.5 less the fill up amount. I don't ever want to go empty for obvious reasons and possible damage to fuel, pump in car.

My previous car was more specific, indicating that it used the most recent 50 miles for that calculation. I don't know whether something similar is use for the F-Type or not, or how often that estimate is updated.
The most I've ever added on fill-up was 17.1 gallons, so I can't say. This car starts squawking at an estimated 50 miles left. My two previous cars stated that the low fuel light came on at 1.5 gallons remaining and 2.5 gallons remaining. Fifty miles at my typical consumption rate is about 2.7 gallons.

interesting comments here, especially the one with not letting the fuel go down too low because of the cooling factor. But I've also heard its good to run the tank LOW so that you use more of the "old gas" and not let it sit. Not sure what I believe, but I think we begin to split hairs. I think i'll just fill up when I have 50 or so miles left and not rack my brain so much.

As for old vs. new gas, it's not like it stratifies in the tank.
