That explains the valve degradation.

I thought it may be, my dealer is baffled and said they have never seen something like this and say its probably my driving style but I don't understand how that could damage my valves or cats.

If you always drove around at low revs I could understand how the valves might stick closed, but if you're a "floor it and grin" kinda guy that would exercise the valves and keep them from seizing.

My car is in dynamic 90% of the time, and I step on it at least a few times every drive I do.

Don’t the valves open at engine start?

So, trolling around at low RPM wouldn’t be a factor since they get designed-in excercise!

When they seize, do they remain open or closed?

Hi there

As I've mentioned in another thread I have an exhaust which has been modded by PO and I'm trying to get back to something good. (V6s)

Current:

Custom downpipes (which i think moved some oxygen sensors which possibly through the map off but that's another story)
Hi flow (i think 200cell) cats
the premuffler has been deleted (is this what people refer to as the resonator) so it's straight pipes back to the
stock muffler

The car makes an amazing noise after 4k (valves open all the time)
but its a bit drony (resonant) and maybe a touch too raspy at normal revs
great mid range and top end power

Should I just put stock cats AND premuffler back on effectively returning it to stock or would replacing JUST the premuffler be enough.
basically i'd be said to loose the awesome top end scream or power but I need it to be a bit better for conventional driving.

thoughts? (unhingd i know you are gonna tell me to get a VAP exhaust!! )

Not necessarily. To get rid of the raspiness, you have to put the OEM down pipes (with OEM cats) and the OEM resonator back on. Then leave the muffler valves jammed open as they already are. You can then decide if you want to get louder from there.

Thanks for the interest and apologies, I've had a very busy month!

We had a recent Cars and Coffee meet in Sydney. A few people captured some vids:

I'll try to get more vids very soon!

Hello Dpark.
I 'm currently thinking abat what you've done.
the same thing.

Are you totally satisfied with it?
I'm the big fan or e60 M5 v10 sound actually.

what do you think ?
If you have more vids, please share.

I'm very happy with it! But not everyone will like it - it can get very loud, especially the bangs and pops.

The tone is higher pitched compared to the original sound. It's not anywhere close to a V10, but if that's what you're after, you'll like this mod

Start to wonder if I could keep the active exhaust even after the surgery , exactly the same thing you've done.

In comfort mode, it is calm but in dynamic, turn into the v10!

does it still work?
