In principle I agree with you but keeping a battery topped up at all times with a quality maintainer (not a continuous tender) ensures the longest possible battery life.

The downside however is that in case you have a drain (OBD port for example), it truly sux if you leave the house after it was on a maintainer, go away overnight and find the battery dead in the morning. This is hidden when you use a tender.

Either way I always suggest doing a battery reset (disconnect and reconnect) before using a maintainer. I made the mistake above when I forgot that I used a scanner... Now I always keep a jumper pack in the car.
